| Post subject: | Oil cooler hose recovering |
Ive been searching for any topics on people recovering there original smiths oil cooler hoses. Ive had no luck.  Has anyone done this repair to there Cooper S oil cooler hoses? and if so whats the best method to get a good result?? Ive been thinking of using black heat shrinking? Regards, Mark |

If you try heat shrink then it may need to be done on the car when the hoses are in the correct shape. If you did it to straight hoses off the car then i doubt they would bend. I would love to see how they turn out and if they crack on the tight bend. Someone on here tried painting them in plastic /rubber paint. It may have been Brett. The outer rubber was removed and the inner steel re-enforcing was painted. (maybe) The other thing is to glue up any small rips and tears - If you have a fairly good set to start with. I used Zapp - CA thin Glue as recommended by Mr Coates but the glue that I bought was off and wouldn't even glue my fingers together. So I gave up for now. |

Brett Nosse from St George used some rubber coating on a pair I sold him. They looked like new. |

Thanks guys for the input. gtogreen, the heat shrink won't make the hoses anymore ridged and will still bend in any direction. I will be trying this to see what results i may get. Can only play around and try.  Convertible mini- Have you got any links or more info on Brett Nosse and trying this method? also what product he used? pics? Regards, Mark |

Cheers for posting that Brad. They actually look pretty good!! Im going to try Self sealing Black heat shrink. The heat shrink has a thin layer of glue on the inside and will help hold it in place when bending. Will have a look also for a paintable rubber product also. I was thinking if there is a product that you could dip the hoses in to coat the braid.... all areas not to be coated will be tapped up. Will keep you updated on my efforts.

I had success in refurbishing a set bought on ebay by using a fellow in South Australia. He is a motorcycle enthusiast who has branched out into rubber & plastic repair in his retirement. He did a fabulous job on the original yellow band oil cooler hoses & an even better job on the original vinyl door trims of my old SL Merc. - I'd even trust him with the Mini trim. - His name is John Inkster, at Aldinga SA, Phone 0412841940. it would be worth the call, but possibly a little geographically remote? |

Ok i used the brush on plasticdip worked well start thin and slowly build up a thick coating |

Find a mate with a punctured (modern) bike tube in the appropriate size (tight fit) - just stretch it on and glue each end and they look like the original. |
