Post subject:  1970 C.S FRONT SEATS
Hello All .
I am getting the trim redone, when I stripped the front seats down I found the drivers seat was different than the passengers seat. The drivers seat was lower and the angle of the back was increased rearwards. John Smidt told me they were police seats so maybe my C,S. was a police vehicle. Is there a register for police vehicles ? Engine 9FSAY4426 Body Plate YG2S4/ 1766.

Sounds like police mods .That engine number dont seem right for a mark 2 .I may be wrong but mine is 9FXEY prefix and I know mine is not original motor Its a clubby GT block

Yep, that engine number isn't correct it seems for a 1970 Mk2 Cooper S....

Should be a 9FXEY prefix for 1970 and there seems to be a missing engine number (digit). Should be 5 numbers yeah?

Winabbey is the one to talk to about police cars. Look for a pair of holes at the left-hand end of the dash rail where a little plate was screwed, a bracket next to the handbrake for a warning light switch (a door light switch), an extra amber light in the speedo fascia, and what might have been the most difficult to remove, though an option on non-police cars, wiring for reversing lights...

1 in 7 Cooper S' were police cars, they weren't a rare thing but many were crashed by the police

that's a MK1 engine anyway.... other than the number, measure the thickness of the block's bottom flange where it meets the gearbox, MK1 are about 3/8", MK2 are a bit over 1/2"

I have heard that sometimes the police, being normally over 6ft, when issued with a car, would deliberately put their feet on the dash and push/bend the seat back back.

Some seats where lowered for the police and I’m sure winabby will explain this further.

BMC's SPO16 was called Lowered Frame Front Seat and was only used on NSW Police vehicles as far as I know. About 1 1/2" was removed from each side of the tubular seat frame and the ends butted and welded. You can see the circular weld in the top pic below, compared to a standard seat frame.

My old boss has a mate was in the force with minis.
The comment was the motors were rebuilt every 15000 km.
I think he meant miles but they flooged em

Yes.

There would have been many thousand lowered seats produced over the 7 year period Minis were supplied to NSW Police. Over a thousand were Cooper S and Clubman GT pursuit vehicles, plus many sedans and vans used as station cars and escort vehicles.

Would like to know how they came to be in my mini purchased in 1978, first registered in Qld in 1970. The car also has reversing lights fitted (the dual filament indicator type within the rear lights), but don't know anything regarding the previous history of the vehicle.

These comments might be unnecessary but some references have been made to reversing lights: these were not bolt-on, external lamp units. They were incorporated in the orange segment of the tail light assembly using a twin contact globeholder like the tail/brake lights in the red section. Selecting reverse meant that both rear orange lamps lit up - more for show than illumination.
Worn-out police Ss were auctioned off after about 30,000 miles. They were worn-out because they weren't always serviced regularly and they ran Ram-Flow air cleaners without any oil in the foam. The auctions were at the former tram sheds at Lilyfield/Leichhardt. I went there once; prices ranged from $1300 to $1800, but you had to get the car registered after the auctions.
