Hey guys,

Bit of a Mini newby and intending to buy a Clubman soon-ish. Just have one massive newby question: what tools do I need for one of these old girls, SAE, Metric or BSW?

All SAE. aka UNF and UNC threads these days. Whitworth and BSF went out at BMC before the Mini arrived.
`Most' threads except the alloy gearbox are UNF. The box is tapped UNC.

Only metric thread on an Oz made Mini AFAIK is the spark plugs..

Markets, Swap Meets, Tool Shop specials bins, Grandpa's Toolbox etc...so long as they aren't worn out

I agree, and also eBay and Guntree. You can usually find good used AF ring, open end and sockets by Sidchrome at low prices that will do the job without breaking the bank. Most of the nuts/bolts are 7/16", 1/2" and 9/16" on a Mini. Get those and you are 90% of the way.

Thanks guys. I have Kincrome stuff in metric so will probably stick with that. It's proven strong and reliable and isn't too costly.

7/16", 1/2" and 9/16 The hardest to find in the shed as you have misplaced them lol.
I had to buy a couple of big impact sockets .Only needed for major stuff but you are stuffed without em

Not sure if you are only asking about spanner sizes or other tools as well.
One of the best investments I made early on was a ball joint separator like the following.

Before getting this, I used the 2 hammers hitting method on the front ball joints & tie rod joints. This made the job so much easier.
