Hi all,

I am seeking photos of original carpet to suit the early green from the Cooper S.

I’ve researched what I can from various online sources and have some pics, however they look more grey than green.

The carpet used by ACC in Victoria is more of an olive green as supplied by gibbons carpets, their pics on the eBay kit make it look much lighter than the actual colour.

I’ve seen ones with sage, apple and some that have just grey carpet.

In the past weeks Ive recieved sample of gibbons and rawsons carpets and I’m even more confused now.

This is driving me nuts. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Sorry I don't have photos but did have a piece of green from a Cooper S with the toe pad attached. While memory is highly unreliable I remember that it was a pale/light green.
From Gibbons' colour chart I thought "Khalka 629" was getting very close.
I had the similar problem picking a blue shade for my car. Was guided by some references to Gibbons' colours by a mini specialist offering the Westminster style of carpet and naming the colour I eventually chose.
"Sage 513" and "Apple 528" looks a bit too grey to me.
I would suggest going for a colour that did not have too many different flecks of colour in it - OK if it's for a room, but too flash for a car.
Also keep it a light shade to make the car look roomy - especially if the car is a dark shade.
In the end, there are very few original carpets out there to say you are wrong.

When you say early Cooper S are you talking about the Feltex or Westminster? I think the change over was around car 1835.

I don't have much in the colour photos of Porcelain Green interiors. Most of the period photos from the mid 60's are B&W.

Thanks Bill B, I’ve been considering Apple, however it’s soo hard to get a close sample.

Gtogreen1969 the Westminster carpet, have early 2000 car and just want a reasonable shade of the carpet.

Phil Feltex was loop pile, ostensibly the same as the later Mk2 & GT. There is a 'Classic' look that is being sold these days which is close, but perhaps to the keen eye, not as tightly knit.

The early cars (and Coopers) had a random fleck through them - a darker shade of the colour itself. Note that other (later) cars within the BMC / Leyland fleet had Feltex as well - Marinas / 1800's / P76 / Nomads.

gtogreen1969 - wow, the pics are just what I was after.

The colour is quite dark when you consider there are years of sun damage and fading over the 40 odd years.

My 10/66 Cooper S. Not Westminster. The colour has probably faded a bit but I’ve definitely seen new carpets that seem to be far too bright green.

Thanks for posting those pics, that’s interesting to see the earlier version of the carpet. I’m also lucky to still have original (Westminster) carpet in my car too. Not many car carpets last 50+ years.

I also know of a very late mk1 that still had some remnants of original carpet and it seems they reverted back to the loop pile type at that point too.

Also interesting is our family had a 1955 Morris Oxford and the carpet in that was the ribbed Westminster style. So I guess it changed back and forth depending on contracts/pricing/availability etc.
