Hi All, My mini has an oil leak somewhere, I'm in the process of getting it back on the road and want to get it on club plates first and then after I work out the bugs take the engine out but not before if I can help it. It probably wont pass with the oil leak, its at the back of the engine somewhere on the radiator end. Planning on doing the timing gasket and if theres a seal in there somewhere too, don't think its from the diff outputs as it only leaks when running. Will do side cover seals too and fuel pump gaskets. Question is, are there any other gaskets and seals that I can get to with the engine in but radiator out?? Thanks |

Before you do anything, thoroughly clean the engine then run it to determine exactly where the leak is to avoid unnecessary work. It may only be the rocker cover gasket... |

Cheers, rocker cover gasket is new but all the other seals are ancient. It’ll get a birthday one day but not yet. I have the head and carbies off so it’s easier to do some seals now I’ll just take the radiator out to make it easier. Gear selector could use new seal too |

Side gaskets on block, use Cooper S silicone rubber gaskets. Diff side cover seals. |

I'd only change the seals in car, if leaking. If it's got rubber joints it's `possible' but much easier to do out of the car. |

Make sure the crankcase is well ventilated as pressure will push oil out past seals. |

between timing cover backing plate and engine, there's a half round seal that might cause it. It's where block joins gearbox. |

Spot on advice , no point in running around thinking maybe it’s coming from here then, oh sh!t , no it’s not , Might be coming from there , cover your carbie with some plastic plus your electrics , grab a $2 can of degreaser, give it a spray ,don’t drown it in water just a light rinse with the hose will do , run it and see what you can find , might save you a lot of work . |

I had a small leak when running for years, couldn't find it as when driving the airflow blew it around. Then one day I dropped a spanner down the back. Retrieving it I found the 48 year old oil hose to the gauge had a slow drip at one end where clamped. New hose fixed it, no more leak! |

Hi all, trying to reseal as much as I can while I’m in there with stuff pulled apart. Will do timing cover seal and gasket, but balked when I got to the timing chain area. I have the engine plate gasket and will check the half moon seal when I’m there. Should I leave t or keep going and take the engine plate off? How hard is it? I don’t want to stuff the timing up that’s all. Thanks again! Also, can I even get to both bolts on that speedo plate? |
