Post subject:  Cooper S register

Hi I have looked at my car in the Cooper S register however, it doesn’t show the body number. The car is the 1969 Mini Cooper S Mk2 Daffodil Yellow car number 576 engine no 54683 with a body number of 109. Can this be added to the register?

I gather that you have 109 2/06 in the gutter above the wiper motor.

Thanks for the reply & yes 109 2/06 in the gutter. I was a bit unsure as to whether it was 109 or 601 when I read that sometimes they were stamped upside down!

YG2S4 2915 Engine no 9F/XE/Y56266. Ex NSW police. Zircon white I believe.

Hi,
I have seen a 1970 Australian Mk2 Cooper S here in NZ and just seeking some further info about it. It appears in your register, the compliance plate numbers and build date 4/70 all match as does the colour. There is no engine number in the register though. The engine with the car has a number which appears to be in the right range for the cars built in that month, it does have twin 1.5" SU's as per the NSW Police spec cars and there are signs that the roof once had an aerial or light mounted. It doesn't have the handbrake light, the seats aren't lowered and I can't see any sign of rear safety belts being fitted.
Is there any list or register for cars that went to the NSW Police?

It maybe an Ex police but because the car is 4/70 it will be missing a few of the goodies that the later SPO41 cars received.

Is the car Tamarisk Green YG2S4 1853? If so then it was spoken about a few times in the past on here. You can search on here for some more info using the chassis number or past rego numbers as keywords 1853, BMC470, 13EEL . You may even be lucky enough to find a past owner.

Mine's a Mk2 but the engine number on the block has long gone and the radiator cowl long cut off to add a wider radiator. It was originally an all red car (now all jet black) with all black interior and carpets bought in Sydney and sent to a local specialist who added a Webasto sunroof and the (then) new look Clubman tail lights, dash top and bottom, and heater. It has the boot board brackets, but what else identifies it?
I do have a compliance plate (not on the car) which says:
4 - 5A -7 -20
Morris 12/70 YG2S4 2788
Is this the right plate, and whereabouts on the Mk 2 did it fit (bulkhead, inner right wing where?)

The plate for 2788 would be a rectangle type and fitted behind the booster like this -

You should still have the 2/06 body build code with a number around 2288. This body code was located in 2 areas. Firstly in the drip rail gutter directly above the wiper motor and then it moved to the firewall behind the master cylinders usually above the binnacle nut and hidden beneath the paint sticker. The stamping may have moved back to the gutter again in later cars so check both areas.

As gtogreen has already stated the Cooper S supplied to NSW Police prior to Aug 1970 were stock standard showroom models from a mechanical perspective. The twin 1.5" SU's were specially designed for NSW Police as part of Special Production Order 41 and had AUD488 specification number on the float bowl tags. Do you know what specification is on the carbies now? If you PM me the engine number we will add it to the register entry.

Other than comments in the Cooper S and Clubman GT Registers there is no known list of cars supplied to NSW Police.

I owned YG2S4 2789 with build # 2275 (located behind master cylinders - # found underneath 'Supercryl Jet Red' paint sticker). Was sold new at Lancaster Motors, Sydney Dec 70. Be interesting to see your build # and the un-ordered build sequence here compared with the other adjacent cars. F

Thanks for the info. That is what is needed to clean up the registers. That car is currently listed as white on the register. The register will be updated with the info you have supplied.

For the record/s, add further details for GT YG2S8 529 - eng # 56367, date 7/71, body build #24, black herringbone interior; sold new 2/9/71 P & R Williams Surry Hills (aluminium sticker plate on O/S inner guard) "MCG - Y5"; neither no side decals nor black on sills. Currently resides in Sydney. F

thanks for your information, sorry it has taken me this long to respond. Yes the car is the Tamarisk Green YG2S4 1853. It doesn't currently have the original engine fitted but it is available. I do have photo of the engine number and it does seem to fit the sequence with other cars assembled at a similar time. I am more sure now that is an ex NSW Police Car due to the car being assembled in April and before the SPO41 coming into effect. I was initially worried as to its authenticity as I couldn't see alot of these "goodies". What would be the best way to get the engine number to you so as the register can be updated?

You can pass on the engine number by private message or on this thread if you want.

Last I saw it was in the Museum at Nelson.
