Hi all, a question for the Guru's:

I am in the midst of installing my supercharger to my 1275. I've got the rad out at the moment to put a Spal sucker thermo fan in.

My question is:
Has anyone removed their stock fan and just run a thermo fan, either pusher or puller?
I was thinking a thermo fan would be efficient enough on its own.

Yes, i'm running a pretty hot 1300 on a thermo-only. Airflow is king - the more CFM through the radiator, the better.

Yes I have. In my build thread it details the cooling issues I had. No problems when moving above 60kph, overheating below that speed.

The thing that ultimately fixed it was removing (part of) the original radiator fan shroud. That shroud was preventing cool air from being sucked in in big enough quantities.

So the Spal fan mounted right up against aluminium radiator with original shroud cut back/opened up works well for me. The real test would be mid summer.

Actually I should also point out during my earlier troubleshooting I installed a heater core as a secondary aux radiator. Hot water out of heater outlet, through aux radiator back into top hose. With a high rpm 120mm computer fan connected to the main thermo trigger. That second rad is still plumbed in so would be assisting. Not sure how I'd do without it, no point in me finding out for my sake.

Many years ago (1970s) Auto Action magazine fitted a Davies Craig electric fan in place of the mechanical one on a 998 Aussie Clubman and drove it round Melbourne for a week. They found it continually couldn't cope in Melbourne slow moving traffic situations and the car overheated. They concluded that it was not a viable proposition.

Of course, thermo fans and their controllers have no doubt become much more sophisticated and efficient by now, and Mini radiators too, but I doubt the traffic situation in Melbourne has got any better!

Spal in particular move much more air than Davies Craig (and are much heavier). If you get the right model. I'd never fit DC anymore.
