I have a couple of 8TR regulators and would like to test them before moving them on. Is there any way that I can do this using a multimeter?

Like you I have a couple that I'd like to test. When I researched this previously I came to the conclusion from various Lucas and other documents that they can only really be tested in position with the alternator. They need a load to be introduced and removed (headlights, heater, etc.) to check correct operation.

If there's a simple alternative I'd love to hear it.

Thanks Doug. Greg and I also believe that we should just swap them out with another car and see if they work. Problem is that’s a three hour round trip to his place! Probably the right solution though.

Maybe you could post up to Convertible Mini for testing?

Thanks Kevin, that is certainly an option. However his (or any other auto sparky) costs would probably be more than the part is worth.

I was hoping for an easy solution because I don’t want to sell something on eBay/Gumtree that is faulty. Ultimately I’ll probably just have to wait until I go to Greg’s place where the cars are or just put them back in the spare parts bin for a while.

If i was looking to buy one on ebay then having it tested on a car would be all the proof i need.

I have taken both my alternator and regulator to an auto electrician some years back and they tested them for me , ( 1 option ) , as others have said , testing them on a car would be the easiest way for sure , I have 3 here that aren't working unfortunately .

I am after a spare if you happen to have a working one  .

Regulators are easy to test on a test bench. BUT you have to make sure you wire them up correctly to a known GOOD alternator as you can easily blow them up in the process.
