I believe a matching numbers car should include the cars original engine number, original chassis number and if possible the original body build number.

Using the Mk2 Cooper S as an example.

Because the engine number was not recorded on the vehicle itself the only way to prove the original matching engine number is by producing the original drivers passport to service, purchase receipt, first registration certificate, or be lucky enough for the cars details to appear on factory documents.

The chassis number stamping on the radiator shroud includes both the YG2S4 prefix and car number. The body number which is around 500 less (most are ± 20) will have the YDO code 2/06.

The stamp sizes, font and location should be the same as other original cars around the same build date.

Rivet counters could even go as far as to check the dates on all the parts but i think we are just talking about the general understanding of a numbers matching car.

Thanks for the response & yes my car is a Mark 2 Cooper S. As per your description I have the chassis & body number plus the number stamped on the block but none of the original papers. I believe they called models of this year the mystery machines as there were no or few compliance plates. Is there an Archive of factory papers ?

going by your username, the car is a '69 model, so yeah, in your case the only matching numbers you have is that the number on the radiator shroud (or scuttle channel) is about 500 different to the number on the firewall...
