I’ve got a 78 1275LS.

I’m having some minor concerns over how much noise is coming from the gearbox

It sort of sounds like a straight cut gearbox noise. Whirring etc.

Gears still change crisply and engage fine.

Just wondering what level of noise is deemed “normal” for minis and if I should be alarmed

Have you had the car long? In other words, has this noise just started, or always been there?
Is the noise in time with each gear?
Is it as you go through the intermediate gears but not in top gear?/ or in all gears?
Is it in time with the wheel rotation/car speed?

So it literally sounds like a strait cut gear box.

No noise when clutch is in.

It doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the wheel rotation/car speed. Just occurs when gears are engaged.

I’ll try and take a video and post tomorrow.

If the noise stops when the clutch is depressed, it could be a loose idler gear (thrusts have worn).

My question about wheel rotation was to find out which part of the box is moving when the noise occurs.
With the clutch in, the whole gearbox is slowing down and no load is going through it; suggests the problem is in the gearbox.
Just a guess but could it be worn layshaft/or bearings moving layshaft gear teeth engagement with mainshaft gears apart to a slightly different position?

I’m having trouble uploading a video.

But when stand still and in neutral with clutch out, it does not really make any obvious angry noises.

It’s more obvious in first and second gears. Particularly on engine braking and down shifting from 3rd to second. You can hear 2nd gear spooling up to the rpm on the engine.

I may just have to take it in for diagnosing.

I’ll give that a go tonight.

so far that sounds pretty normal but try that again but this time get into 4th to show if the noise goes away. The whine normally is because at some point the main gearbox bearing has collapsed but still used and worn the gear set on a slight angle, new bearing will not fix that. If the noise goes away in 4th it's more than likely layshaft bearings as the layshaft is not used in top gear.

My rebuilt-by-a-professional rod change box sounds like a straight-cut also. I was initially confused, but it performs flawlessly, so I'm not bothered by it anymore
