Hi All,
I have just picked up a nice rust free round nose shell where some numpty has previously cut out the inner guards for an engine transplate, which I will arrange to purchase and get welded back in . Unfortunately I am unsure of the model as the build plate on firewall is missing and all I have is the body number imprint on the firewall.
I have noticed the front support strut that is straight up and down on my other mini (behind the grill) is on an angle towards the right. What would that signify?
Is it possible to identify the model from the body number?
also how difficult would it be to get registered?
Cheers
Tim

There are lots of things to help identify body shells. The angle brace is easy to add to a normal body to make it seem like a Cooper S.
What else can you tell us about the body?
What floor pressing does it have?
Any photos?
Whats your location? Someone near by might be able to have a closer look and help with the i.d?

Having a chassis number on the firewall will make your car a Mk1.

If the chassis number is on the passenger side then you should have an early 850.

A high chassis number will discount a Cooper or Cooper S.

The vertical brace was used on the Deluxe, Cooper, 850 and the 1965 Cooper S.

More info or pics would help.

Is the car dry suspension or hydro?

Sliding or windup windows?

Wipers park to the left or right?

What is the chassis number? Within 10 will be ok if you don't want to say.

Did it come with REGO plates? or paperwork? that would be one way to identify the car rather than look for something it may not be

Thanks for the quick replies all - good information to start with for a mini novice. Unfortunately no rego plate or reg papers, just a tidy mini shell. I am just trying to get understanding of what model this may be to satisfy my curious nature and plan to build this as a tidy mini using the plethora of parts I have accumulated over the years.

Watching with interest. I have a UK built mini with no Aussie compliance plate (has other id plates though) and need to negotiate the rego process when the time comes.

post '67 but pre March '69... Wipers park on the left but doesn't appear to have captive nuts to suit a MK2 type speedo surround.

Appears to have had an oil cooler at some point, but the flange has been bent back up, maybe?

Providing the wiper panel is original

If the chassis number on the firewall is over 32860 then its probably a 1968/69 Deluxe.

If the chassis number is between 4029 and 5486 then you may have a 1968/69 MK1 S

If the chassis number is lower than 2500 then it may be a 1968/69 Minimatic or Mini Minor.

Need more info. I cant even see if it has a R/H tank because those 2 pics are taken at the wrong angle.

Depending on age that can be quite good news. UK cars have BMIHT in support (age dependant - older the better) and NSW is quite happy to accept Heritage Certificate data.

Although, RMS was quite happy to register both my UK cars using the (welded on) body number for ID with no other docs ..other than a handwritten receipt as proof of ownership.

Cheers, Ian.

Thanks again. The body number on the firewall is between 2300 and 2400, no right hand tank and the cross member that has been cut out (but I have) has a support bracket on angle towards the bottom right not straight up and down. The previous owner thought it may have been 1964 or 63 but couldn't remember and has misplaced the wiper motor to confirm.

It may be an early 1969 Minimatic. YMA2S4.

That would be my bet. Does it have (or previous evidence of) a gearstick hole at the front of the floor, right up against the firewall? maybe 4" by 3"
