This is from Australian Wheels magazine road test 1966 and the battery terminals seem to be closer to the tank.

Also I don’t think the Cooper S ever had the battery cover as it had the boot board instead. Do any original owners remember if this was the case?

Neither of my Cooper S cars, 66 and 68 had a battery cover from new.
Battery terminal arrangement can be had in a number of configurations. Either at the edge of the short side or in the middle of the short side with +ve and -ve terminals to suit +ve or -ve earth cars
IIRC with a +ve earth S the terminals were close to the RH tank. If you have them on the spare wheel side they are too close to the battery clamp.
I have changed my S to -ve earth and simply turned the battery around and made sure the +ve terminal can't touch the battery clamp.

Be aware that the diameter of the battery posts are slightly different between Neg and Pos and clamps might not fit well if swapped.
