Post subject:  Spin on oil filter conversion

Hi all

Looking to fit a spin on oil filter to avoid stress with leaks.

Can you use the existing oil feed line or does it require a different one?

Also looking at a picture of where the oil head bolts onto the block there are the two holes for the studs and there is a hole in the middle does this hole serve any purpose or is it a casting “blank”

Finally what is best studs or bolts to attached the oil head? If bolts what size are they?

I believe some later mini k’s came with screw on oil filters From factory can anyone confirm this and approx date

Thanks

Pretty sure its the same ..but I use an oil cooler and flex line so can't be sure the rigid connections are the same...

You can either buy an aftermarket kit or just find an original one at the wreckers (good luck with that :) They bolt straight on.

"...I believe some later mini k’s .." and Clubmans.... There should be stacks out there....

Studs are standard (and different; either bolt on/spin on) (but that will be obvious when you have both in your hand) but I can't see that bolts wouldn't work.

Cheers, Ian

The existing rigid pipe and in-line unions work with the spin on filter housing. The oil filter gets oil and and has to send it out. The hole between to the two studs facilitates that.

What type/brand of gasket goo do people use when fitting the gasket to the spin on conversion head and to the block?

Will loctite 587 flange sealant blue max silicone do the trick?

Thanks

No the mounting flange is flimsy you need a gasket. Either buy the proper late oval one or make one from gasket material.
The early cartridge filter gasket won't fit.

Hi Dr mini

I am getting rid of the cartridge filter and replacing it with a spin on conversion kit. The kit comes with a gasket so I guess the question I was asking is when I bolt the spin on head to the block do I put any goo on the gasket or simply just put the gasket on and tighten the spin on head studs

Thanks again

I would use #3 Aviation sealant if it were me.

Loctite?

Use either of these. Permatex form a gasket is better but if you only have Loctite 515 use that.

So by applying the permatex between the gasket and the block and the gasket and the spin on head it will give you a better seal than just by using a gasket without any sealant

Is there a how to on how to fit a spin on oil filter conversion kit?

Thanks to all

If you are fitting a long term gasket its best to apply sealant to both sides of the gasket. These sealants will seal up any scratches or deformities on mating surfaces that a gasket can't.

Not sure about a how to??

I wouldn't use the Ultra Blue 587 you mentioned earlier on a filter head gasket because its after the pickup and filter. You don't want a chunk of that blue stuff getting stuck in the oil galleries.

Is it useful for a sump plug then?
