Did Lucas Australia make the distributor cap for the MK 2 Cooper S?
I understand the original colour of the cap should be black.
What would be the part number inside the cap.
Any info would be great thanks

Yes I believe Lucas Australia did. They were used on other makes here also.

Bosch equivalent is a GL278.
Intermotor 46920.
Lucas 62410373, according to eBay seller in UK. This may also be the Oz number, I am not sure.

The 29D4 distributor came with a black Lucas Australia cap with the part number 62410456 embossed inside under the coil lead connector.

The only caps readily available now are the Bosch brown ones.

Mk1 S had a 23D4 dizzy with side entry cap. Most? Mk2 S were 29D with top entry.

Thanks Doc...side entry were better for water protection with a boot...wonder what drove the change? (probably the parts bin overflowing with top entry...)

My guess was cost! 23d4 from england as opposed to locally built 29d. They did that with most stuff didn't they? 2 screw tail lights example, interiors, rocker and timing covers. What ever could be made here and not shipped over could be a saving.
