Would anybody have the correct part number / Australian Lucas part number for the solenoid on the MK 2 Cooper S
Maybe someone has a Australian Lucas parts book - 1968 to 1970.
A detailed photo would also help :-)

I remember a thread from a while ago that had photos and discussions about that. There were queries about either red or black buttons on them if I recall.

This is best I can find so far: from Mk1-forum.net in the UK a thread about poor quality "Lucas" units and a link to an eBay item for Durite alternative, with reference to the Lucas part it replaces.
I have also found an old Lucas solenoid with push button but dated 12/61 and from a Morris Messenger van. Probably much the same as fitted to Ss later. Number 7646 2D, but no luck finding Lucas parts book numbers.

Just saw winabbey's post: the photos are for standard minis and not the push button ones fitted to Ss. On his Parts page, the crossed out number might be closer to S fitting.

Bill - I'm not aware that the S had a different solenoid to other Mini models of the time. That unit pictured is off my unmolested S. I don't remember the push button style on the S I bought new in 1969 but earlier cars such as the 850 I do remember it. The Mini K parts book also shows the same 62933009 solenoid.

Bill - what makes you think the S had the push button version and was different to other models? Always happy to be corrected of course as my memory is not as sharp. :)

Further to the above the Lucas parts book shows a change to the starter solenoid around 1967/68. It says 62953009 in the book but I think that's a typo - the 5 should be a 3. The same part was used across the Mini range, except the Auto, which is also reflected in the BMC parts book page above. The same switch continued on to the Clubman series.

I wonder why the Auto has a different solenoid? Maybe extra load needed when cranking?

Edit: BMK1727 that shows in the parts book as beginning with the Cooper S in early 1968 appears to be the Lucas UK version of 62933009. The rapid move by BMC Australia to locally made parts means the OZ version replaced it.

I looked in my GT Parts manual and that number was listed but I thought it may be a different number due to being MK 2 Cooper S.

My memory is open to interpretation, but when I bought the 8/70 S in 1975, the push button solenoid was fitted, as a friend pointed out at the time that it wasn't a great security item, making stealing it a bit easier.
I was the 2nd private owner after the police and the car had been bored, etc. so it could have been changed before me. I have 2 old pushbutton solenoids in my 'collection' - 1 has no markings at all the other is also push button 8/68 so maybe a bit early to be fitted to a 1970 build.
Also, Greg Coates' Bathurst mini has the pushbutton solenoid as it appeared in TBMCE No. 16; the publicity brochure also shows it.

Thanks Bill. I do remember it being a convenient tool on the cars where it was fitted so possibly others retro-fitted it to make tuning and other engine work a bit easier, including Greg Coates.

I think I still have an aftermarket product comprising two leads with crocodile clips and push button that did the same job on a temporary basis when the newer solenoid was fitted.

EDIT: Yes, the early Cooper S had the push-button as already mentioned and shown in that Mark 1 brochure. By the time the Mini K and Mark 2 S appeared the brochure shows the square style solenoid. This brochure was printed in 1969.

The 2ST (cylinder shape) push button solenoid changed to the 4ST (square shape) push button solenoid during the Mk1 production at YKG2S2 3966.

That new 4ST introduced at 3966 sill had the "manual-operating control" button. So at some point after that it was replaced again by a 4ST without the button (i.e. part 62933009). ;)

Yep - I haven't worked out when the 4ST lost its push button. We would probably need to look at the one owner cars.

Looking at photos won't help that much as they kept the little cap on the non push button type.
