Yep - I haven't worked out when the 4ST lost its push button. We would probably need to look at the one owner cars.

Looking at photos won't help that much as they kept the little cap on the non push button type.

I have 2 of the square 4ST with the usable push button and they both have red buttons. Most people don’t believe me that square type originally had a push button until I demonstrate it.

Are they dated or do you know what cars they came off?

I'm also interested to know if they are Lucas Australia with a date stamp and part number Phillb.
There's got to be a few around for sure.

Don’t know what off. They should be dated. I’ll check tonite if I remember.

Here is the Lucas Australia solenoid I have. It is not push button and don't know if it came with my car when new.

Is it the push button start type and do you know if its original to your car?

I have 2 of the square type that has the small red push button between the terminals.

The date is in the black plastic part though.

Edit: on the metal part they both say Lucas England 4ST

One is 76766E 4969 (week49?)

Other is 76766F 0269 (week2?)

Thanks for posting those Phill.

The Lucas Australia parts book lists the UK made 76766 solenoid as being for the AH Sprite, MG Midget and MGB, so CKD vehicles that were assembled here. These vehicles had very few local parts according to the parts books.

I haven't seen any documentation to support the 76766 solenoid being used on the Australian Mini range.

I don't know but I assume not until an actual example with Lucas Australia branding and date appears. Going by the narrative in the SLS gtogreen1969 posted earlier there was a solenoid with push button for a period but perhaps this was UK sourced, maybe BMK1727 as per the parts book I posted previously.

I've found two Australian Lucas solenoids this week which have the black top button.
One is dated 10/72 and the other is dated 1/76.
Lucas Australia - the part number and 12v + date all appear on the bracket.

Are you talking about a button that operates? The 62933009 solenoid has a black knob but it's part of the solid plastic enclosure and isn't a button.

What is the part number on those?

On the 72 solenoid it reads 6/72 not 10/72 sorry.
The part number is the same but reads 629330090 so a extra 0

Yes the black knob is part of the solenoid.

Cheers

That 0 suffix may be a D. Lucas routinely used an alpha suffix to show a running change to a part.

I had a bit of a google and it looks like the BMK1727 is sold as a 2ST and 4ST. There are too many cross references for it. A 1960s catalogue with pics would help if we could find one.

Whichever one (either BMK1727 or 76766) was first used it wasn't long before the non push button 62933009 Aust version started in 1968.
