| Post subject: | Buying A Mini - What to look for |
Hi All, I am going to look at a 73 Leyland Clubman that I'm thinking of buying and was wondering if I could get some tips on what to look for? I am new to Minis so would appreciate any guidance! All I know that's Mini specific is to look for rust in the boot. Thanks! |

Look for rust pretty much everywhere lol. Check the usual places carefully, especially floors, boot, seam joins etc. Also check the usual car type stuff, oil leaks, smokey engine, noisy cv joints and that kind of stuff. Make sure the electrical stuff works too! I'm sure some others will chime in with stuff to check. |

Welcome Ben, I came across this article excerpt: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1396 Whilst it's not about buying a car, there's some bits about the body aspect as mentioned above. What is your location? Maybe somebody close by may offer to come have a look with you. Give it a good once over before driving. Because if you're like me and had never driven a mini before - you'll get hooked straight away and buy the damn thing even with all it's imperfection. Be warned though, you're getting yourself into a labour of love... Good luck with the search. |

Hello Ben The biggest cost is normally body repairs ,rust and respray.It would be best not to buy a heap of junk, the cost to fix the car will be more than buying a good Mini.You need to look around and take your time when buying. Allen Good Luck |

Best to get a car in decent nick that doesn't work than buy a car that works but is full of rust. In the scheme of things, mechanical problems are far cheaper to fix... |

Thanks All! I'm in Sydney (will add it to my profile). I have worked on restoring old cars before (my last was very full of rust) definitely want to stay away from that! I can handle mechanics and electrics myself. And yes I'm being very wary of just buying the first I find, I've wanted one for as long as I can remember! |
