I've personally never understood the concept of wide rims with narrower tyres. A while back I considered going up to 6" rims for more grip, but of course the tire selection is the same, so it makes no difference there. Surely going up to 7" just makes the wheel stick out more due to the offset, and makes the rims easier to damage since they're now sitting at the extremities (narrower rims means the tyre will hit a curb instead of the rim). Is it purely a cosmetic thing?

which means the scrub radius is larger meaning the wheel has more leverage over the steering, read more bump steer and torque steer and generally poor handling.

I think a wide rim on a narrow tire might prevent the tire deforming as much when loaded up around a corner, of course it's deforming for a reason and stopping it flexing probably means it lets go all of a sudden with less warning. The same could probably be better achieved by running higher tire pressures...

Comparing 165/70 -10 Yoko tyres on 5" and 6" rims, consensus used to be they broke away more progressively on 5". On 6" they hung on longer but then bam!
