There is no exact way of dating a gearbox. The gearbox number was not directly attributed to the engine number and the power plants were not fitted in any particular order.

Having said that I have over a dozen FAXe photos and they range from FAXe 1082 to FAXe 4308 but the actual number would be much higher. Some people have boxes with blank serial number pads.

You could try and average out the numbers over the 2 1/2 year period the 9FXEY power plants were used in the MK1S, MK2S and GT. The 9FXEY engines used were numbered from around 51000 to 56400.

I have one example that may help. Car 2031 has engine 9FXEY 55494 and is fitted with gearbox FAXe 4253. But I can't confirm the gearbox is original.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

That is very interesting, my gearbox is also FAXe1082. Do you have any history on that box?

I know nothing about the box. Not even sure where the pics came from. Either it was on Ebay or you may have previously shared the pics.

Another thing to add is I think the UK Cooper S in 1969 used 9FXEY engines so that would also make it harder to date the gearbox using the FAXe number.

I'd rather date an engine than just go round and round with a gearbox, more chance of some up and down action with a nicely loosened up donk...
