Hi Ausmini Folks, I'm clutching at my final straw...
I have had a problem for quite a while now with vibrations through my steering wheel caused by wheel wobble.
At lower speeds it seems like the car is driving on egg shaped tyres, but then at higher speeds it obviously
skips along causing a constant and significant vibration (up and down) through the steering column. At some speeds
it is reasonably bearable but then at others it is extremely annoying and possibly dangerous!
When I jack up the car and run the front wheels, they do not run true, it looks like they are running an elliptical motion
around the bearing centreline and the CV joint is not running square in the hub.
Now, as I said this has been going on for a while now, so I have tried many many things to try and solve it including...
Wheel balancing (numerous times)
Wheel alignment (numerous times)
Stripped and rebuilt the hub (numerous times)
Tried different hubs
Replaced the bearings (numerous times)
Replaced the CV Joints (numerous times)
Replaced the brake discs and pads
Tried various sets of rims
Tried various sets of tyres
I now have near new hubs, drive flanges, CV Joints, bearings, rims and new tyres and still the problem persists.
I had the bearing outers pressed into the hubs to ensure they were square, and I fairly recently found out that I needed
to skim the bearing spacer to get the correct amount of pre-load on the bearing. This has improved things I must admit
but the bearings are now fairly tight yet the CV joint still does not run square in the hub. The CV joint is running in an elliptical
movement which then makes the wheel look like it is buckled (but it is not!).
BTW, these are 8.4" disc brake hubs.
Does anybody have any other suggestions as to what could be causing the CV joint to run like this?
This seems really hard to explain in words and might not raise any answers but I am at my wits end!
Many thanks for reading
Richard
