Hi guy's it's me again, I have been out sick for a while and my mini got sick too. I replaced my distributor with the original one and also upgraded to the electronic ignition (no points) I used a NGK BP6ES spark plug.

If I lean out the mixture the car would idle fine but hesitate when accelerating so I would richen the mixture a bit until it does not hesitate. Now my plugs are fouled.

My questions are:

1. Can I use the BP6ES with an electronic ignition or should I use the BPR6ES?
2. I did not replace my ignition coil when I upgraded to an electronic ignition, is there a specific ignition coil that I need to use? the ignition coil is the only component of the ignition system that is old.

Have you timed to distributor correctly? What is your advance set at?

If you use a thicker oil in the SU dashpot, it will enrich the mixture on acceleration. Too little, too thin or no oil will result in a lean mixture whenever you put your foot down.

Check with the supplier of the Electronic Distributor you bought to see what Coil they recommend. if bought new the Distributor should come with Test Procedures and Instructions. Very important to use correct Ohms Value coil to suit the distributor. Coil failure most times occurs when they warm up meaning, when you test a coil 'cold' it will read good but when warm it can cause all weird and wonderful faults. Best is to find out what supplier suggests and buy a new coil. I always supply instructions and test procedures with my Electronic Distributors. always read and follow instructions. The old points can cop it from a Crook Coil but an Electronic Distributor module blows faster than a fuse when the coil is shorted and overloads it.

Maybe I did not explain it well but I bought only the part that goes into the original distributor that replaces the contact point. Not the whole distributor.

The same principle applies: ask the supplier of the new electronic points what coil they recommend.

I bought mine at the same time and I bought the recommended coil so I knew they’d work together (from Tony / convertible mini)

Awesome thank you for the help. Based on this what is the best standard ignition coil? mine is quite old and mounted above the starter. When I get a new coil I will mount it behind the Alternator as it should be.

After being let down by a couple of modern coils I use an ancient, crusty but trusty GT40 coil I had lying around. I have the same electronic ignition kit.
