I have been searching for a suitable sealant to seal off the lower glass channel to the early doors fitted with sliding glass . Originally BMC used Dum Dum which has not been available for a long time. My search tells me that it does not set like silicon or Sikaflex does. The thought of applying heat to remove the channel in the future does not appeal.
Can anyone tell me what they have used in lieu of Dum Dum. Maybe Butyl Mastic ( windscreen
sealant )might be suitable.
I know I need to seal the underneath of the the channel to the door. Do I also seal the outer vertical side of the channel to the door?

I'm preparing to do the same job for the second time on my 1962 850 and will be using a non setting Butyl mastic again (Bostick or similar). Last did this job over 30 years ago using a grey butyl mastic. This time I will use black to seal the sides of the sliding window tracks to the outer door edge so that when I clean up the sealant, it blends in with the new black felted window tracks. I don't want to see a black line of sealant between the chrome track retainer and the door paint on the inside, so will use grey again to seal between the door frame and the underside of the chrome retainer. The non setting butyl mastic does form a skin eventually ,but can be a pain picking up dust while setting. You need to do a dry test fit of the glass, runners and chrome to make sure it goes in OK, as you don't want to be fiddling with the track assembly once you have got fresh butyl smeared on everything. Last time I went to a lot of trouble fitting the countersunk philips head screws back in the same holes of the old ones. This time I will just drill three new holes and use SS screws, having marked the locations of the cross members on the door with masking tape before final assembly.

For historical purposes this bulletin may be of interest. I'm guessing there are superior products available now to do the same job, like the ones already mentioned.
