It gives a look like the bonnet catch is no good. Maybe their safety catch does not work ?There are some MCSs for sale and it looks bad to me .

Some racing regulations require a secondary means of keeping the bonnet closed.

The Italian Job minis and many rally cars had them fitted, so they are a popular modification!

The Mini safety catch is rubbish, if it fails the results are ugly. Straps are worth having on if you track it (drive days).
I have a pair for mine but have not put back on since I painted it.

Straps are fine on the road for that Boy Racer look...but the Scrutes frown on leather straps on the track...no way of telling how old they are and they can snap!

[Please...no flaming me with pics of race Mini's with straps!]

It started a long time ago...
And it didn't always work.

Can the same be said for the clubby catches? They're not great either, but they have the 'harpoon' as a backup if that fails - it's saved me before.

Its quite exciting when they open up. If you're doing highway speed the hinges will bend or even tear the sheet metal in front of the windscreen. Once they're up the wind holds them up pretty tight. They don't drop back down until you've almost stopped. It can mean quite a long period of driving by braille.

This short video features Timo Makkinen in the Works Cooper S on the 1967 Finnish Thousand Lakes Rally where he drove a stage with the bonnet open (photo posted above). Unfortunately the commentary is in Finnish but you'll no doubt get the idea.

Mine flew up at 140 km/h overtaking a road train in WA.
Had a milli second warning. Backed off until the truck tailgate passed then coasted over to the side of the road. To say it was frightening was an understatement. When it happened I had lots of truck a few feet to the left, big trees to the right and a bonnet flat against the windscreen. I still don't know what the correct procedure is to adjust the bonnet latch mechanism correctly...

Us 'boy racers' of the day just used a bungee cord.

So did the 'men racers'. The BMC Works Bathurst cars had bungees to hold the bonnet down.

Saw this on a Porker and thought it quite elegant...plus no holes in bonnet...

I did that at the mini-only regularity at Phillip Island in 2009 - except that I attached it at the bottom and was clipping it to the bonnet when I closed it - someone other than me (not naming names) closed my bonnet and they black/orange flagged me when it started dragging along the road

fark, glad you survived that one

I don't know how to adjust a mini bonnet catch either, my bonnet has had a habit of popping up at odd times for the last couple of years. I've been using a double-sided velcro strap through the grille and around a nerf bar to catch it.

The bonnet is off at the moment, hopefully after I put it back on it'll stay shut
