Hey - there is a guy on Gumtree selling a Mini K, reporting it is 1 of 500 built. That seems low to me.

Does anyone know how many Mini Ks were built? Or perhaps whether there was a special edition produced that could explain this?

Almost 13000 built from 69 to 71. Sounds like an old car salesman trick trying to add something special to it. That car is YG2S1 1752 so its a mid 1969 car.

Thanks - hmm it's a 1969 so I'm not sure.
I messaged him and he suggested I ring him. His sig links to a mini specialist.
Thanks again GTO.

EDIT: Yep that's the one - just saw the bottom part of your post with the link to the ad

If it was a lift-up door handle K it would be another story!

I spoke to the seller by phone. He acknowledged that there were thousands of Mini Ks produced "but there was only 500 built with the round K badges on them. If you try to buy these badges they are almost impossible to get and I saw a badge for sale for over $400 and if I took this on a trailer to a a car show I'd get........"...etc etc etc

So...yeah I don't know anything about that but according to the seller it's tres special. I'll look around a bit.

Edit: also he dropped some names in the Mini world which would be familiar to you all

Pfft! Alarm bells ringing here...be careful...negotiate him back down to earth...price is OK but bulldust accompanying it is OTT.

I'm looking for a mate and given the link was posted I'm remaining diplomatic about my views about the seller. We're looking elsewhere, but I agree the project and price itself actually look okay.

The flappy door handle thing will be where he's got the idea.

Everyone knows that there weren't many Mk2 Cooper S built with flappy door handles ("less than 170" is a commonly quoted figure). Somehow, by extension, it became commonly repeated that flappy door handle Mini K's were also rare (you hear "less than 170" up to "less than 500"). This was said so often that it achieved 'fact' status. My guess is that the seller has further extended the urban legend to encompass all Mini Ks.

500 would only be about one months production. 1968-71 would have been a few lean years if the factory only turned out 500 Mini Ks, considering they were the bread-and-butter model in that period.

So are the “bread-and-butter” ones even more rare ?

No, Mini ks were built from, March 69 to December '70 with the early style of door handles, but only from December 70 to June 71 wth flappy handles. So the early style should out number the late ones by about three to one.
