Have you checked if there is any resistance between your block and the chassis? This would do the same insulating the temp sender from the block with thread tape.

OK so thought I should give an update on this. I've now tried the original sender (black), replacement from global spares (black) and also replacement from minisport (red). The red one seems to get a slightly higher reading but only in the 'C' area.

Heading to a mates workshop on the weekend to replace ball joints so I will check the resistance etc. while there and report back. If I have time to pull the dash and speedo etc. out I will see if there is a voltage stabilizer.
