Hi All

I know I have seen something on this site about fitting new engine mounts without removing the engine, but I cannot find it. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Can't point you to a post or topic, but it's simple enough, though can be frustrating.

I always weld the nuts for the bolts that go through the subframe, but other people don't and say they don't have any issues

Probably easiest to do it one side at a time..

- remove the 2 bolts & nuts that go through the subframe,
- lift up that end of the motor,
- undo the 3 bolts that go into the clutch cover / radiator support bracket,
- replace mount,
- reinstall 3 bolts,
- lower motor,
- reinstall 2 subframe bolts & nuts but leave them loose in case the other end needs a bit of wiggle room
- lower engine
- repeat for the other mount
- tighten 2 subframe bolts on either side

Beware, some cheaper mounts were too thick or were incorrectly dimensioned. Rover mounts cost more but are worth it.

Is it similar to removing radiator?

You can get engine mounts with captive nuts built in. But those have the issues that the doc mentions - they're too thick, and getting them into place is a nightmare. I've heard that squeezing them in a vice overnight can help, but can't confirm.

I've used these on a couple of cars with no figment issues, but the captive nuts are a bit weak... I usually tack nuts to genuine ones now as suggested above.

Hopefully they've been improved then. For me, it simply would not fit. There's a bracket that the radiator-side engine mount and radiator attaches to - I had to remove the upper bolt that holds that bracket to the engine to get it to push closer to the engine, then fit the mounts, and then jack up the engine from the sump to re-fit the bolt. It took hours.

Thanks for all the great input. Will buy in the 'good' engine mounts and try fitting with the nuts on the wheel arch side. If that does not work, will tack nuts on.

Make sure you position the nuts in the centre of the mount's holes before tack welding. Or you won't get the bolts to line up.
Because the mount's holes are bigger than the subframe ones.
