What's the current situation with the supply of laminated Mini windscreens? Is there more than one manufacturer or type to choose from? I'd prefer plain glass without tint along the top, as per original.

The last one I bought was back in the 1970's and was locally made by ACI Pilkington. Any advice on what to buy and where would be appreciated.

Be wary of some of the screens offered by some suppliers, including Windscreen O'Briens and one other I can not remember, as they are too high and will not fit. They will attempt to blame the car repairer saying that the window opening is too small. The screens need about 3 to 4mm removed from the top edge to fit. I have had two fitted, had a stone chip within three months of putting the car on the road, and both needed work to fit.

What kind of work was it John that you had to have done to make them fit? Who shaves glass for example?

O'Briens did the work on both occasions. I simply had both front and rear screens fitted when I finished the car and then when I got the stone chip.

I had O'Brien fit one a couple of years ago. It has a very light tint all over, no tint band. It fitted well, no mods needed.

I'm doing some online research and note the following businesses, especially the first one in QLD that does un-tinted windscreens. But comments like John's above is a great help so I don't unwittingly choose a poor quality version when good quality is also available, that's why I'm asking for any and all experiences by the Mini community.

Doug,
Installed front laminated windscreen in my 69 Mk2 in late January this year. It is a FUYAO Chinese screen. Cost was about $140. It fitted well with the help of a good friend and some WD40, line trimmer cord and black silicone sealer. I did see an Autoglass Warehouse one on eBay for $110. I buy most of my parts from Readspeed here in Brisbane and I try to support Mini parts suppliers.

I recently purchased a windscreen for my MG Midget from Auto Glass Warehouse in Brisbane and it fitted perfectly and was happy with the quality.

Hi winabbey
Find out who the local second hand car dealerships use for their windscreens. price is about the same as cgo stated (140)plus allow fitting of nearly the same, at your home. If you require the chrome surround ( like Cooper S, make sure it is available, or otherwise the black rubber lock strip will be fitted. i didn't get a quote from obriens for a mini screen but on my daily , the obriens were 560 compared to 300 - and this was the non insurance special- so i think our insurance companies are getting ripped off and we are all paying for it. And finally to get back to your question, the screen was non tinted, and took one day to deliver from warehouse. - i didn't check brand sorry

Thanks all. I now have a few leads. Won't need it for a few weeks as the car is still being painted.

I already have the rubber and chrome filler strip.

The laminated screen I purchased online from Autoglass and picked up from the local warehouse that supplies a lot of the local fitters was a Chinesse manufacture. It fits, but the rubber lays flat at the bottom, causing the ashtray to foul the rubber. My fitter blamed the curvature of the glass on the bottom of the screen.

With regards to windows provided with the tinted strips along the top of the glass, are they also available without?

My research shows that all new Mini windscreens available in Australia are slightly tinted all over. You can get them in two styles - with or without the more darkly tinted band across the top. I'm going without the band, so closer to original.

I have now managed to source a completely clear screen of good quality. Thank you everyone for the input.
