We've come into a slight problem in regards to fitting our speedo cable onto the back of the gauge.

The engine is fitted with a 5" long inlet manifold with a 45 DCOE Weber (with 16mm Ram Tubes, including mesh cover's...), however when trying to fit the speedo cable, the mesh cover interferes with the cable, which has the ability to either break the back of the gauge or the cable in the foreseeable future.

Now, we've been told (and researched...) that an angle speedo drive from either a Rover 3500 or an early model Range Rover may suit this application?

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Smiths made a right angle drive adapter with the correct cable thread and size that might help. Problem is they are difficult to find nowadays and can be expensive when you do find one.

I found one at the wreckers on a Rover


I had taken a mini speedo to check the thread was OK and it was all good. The part number is BH 2410/10. It set me back $15

After reading Timmy's post a while back I kept my eye on eBay and Gumtree, as I was looking for a solution to the same problem. I found a guy on Gummie wrecking a Rover P6 (3500 v8) and he sold me the speedo angle drive. I had to pay $60 including postage but I'm still happy - hey I didn't have to spend a day wrestling spiders and rats in a wrecking yard!

Mine is a Smiths BG 2410 just like in Winnabey's pictures - and it looks the same as the BH model that Timmy found. I can confirm that it fits and works a treat. Now I can fit my 40 DCOE and have a working speedo.

If space is an issue (well, MORE of an issue! ) then there is also a lower profile version that goes right up against the back of the speedo case. I believe they were used on some MGB's, Range Rovers, etc. They pop up on ebay occasionally and range from cheap to ridiculous. I got one last year for about $40 I think.

They are also available from some on-line english parts vendors. There are several part numbers they carry, but I think it usually is because there are different shaped plates to engage a locating peg on the back of the speedo case for fixing the angle the cable runs at. All I have taken notice of are 1:1 ratio.
