So I thought I would document and ask the questions here .
There are 2 types of gasket and thickness and also 2 types of bolt washers

I have a 998 block from 1967 and it the cover plate in the picture came off it .
I have lost the bolts and can’t remember the original arrangement .
My problem is the 5/16 x 1.5 bolt is too short .
The parts diagram indicator 1.25 Inch bolts should fit with the cup and rubber grommet arrangement.
However I found this is not the case.

Can anybody tell me how the original fibre washer arrangement is supposed to work does it have a flat washer behind the bolt head?

If you’re putting the bolt through that way the cover plate will be on backwards. In the photo the lip that retains the seal is facing up

IIRC there are also 2 types of side cover plates.
The one you have and a plate that does not have the raised edge to retain the rubber gasket.
The cork gasket, fibre washer and bolt are used with the flat side cover plate.
Don't know what length bolt you need for the 2 different types of cover plate.

The bolt with fibre washer is wrong for the cover in top pic. It suits only the early cover with no lip, and takes the thin cork gasket.

The lipped cover shown takes the red silicone rubber gasket and the bolt, cap and o-ring shown in 2nd pic.
You need to stretch the rubber so it fits inside the lip, then hold cover on block and quickly screw the bolt in. No gasket sealant needed.

Make sure the plate isn't distorted or the bolt hole hasn't been overtightened and compressed...

Only lightly compress the cork gasket...consider some thread lock on the bolts...if the cover comes off whilst engine is running, it can make a real mess :(

You don't need thread lock on these later cover bolts, as the O ring sticks to the bolt and cap and stops it unscrewing.

What length bolt for the later type? 1.5inch wasn’t long enough...
