I have just purchased a new 74 van ( promise I will start a project page). I have flushed all fluids and added a new battery. Turned the key and nothing. Wiring isn't great but I have power to engine bay. Checked power to fuse box and some areas such as lights and horns and all good.
I tried shorting terminals on solenoid and it turned for 1 second. I had a new solenoid so installed that. Still nothing.
One thing to add no gauges yet but doesn't make sense that's the issue.
Help please

Check the starter independently using jumper cables & good battery.
Positive to starter terminal, negative to engine block.
Make sure its outa gear & coil HT lead off.

There should be a small white/red trace wire going into the solenoid separately to the heavy leads. This is the tigger from ignition switch to energise solenoid.

Is the engine earth in place and secure (tight connections)?

Yep red white wire connected. Should there be voltage on wire at what point? When key is turned to crank or constantly?

Earth strap properly fixed. Took it off and cleaned both ends to make sure.

Will try kicking over starter manually to check starter

The White/Red wire should have 12V when ignition switch is turned to spring-loaded "start" position.
Do any of these other circuits work: heater motor; stop lights; reversing light (if fitted); blinkers?

As AEG163job suggests - check the starter first.

have you been able to get a socket on to the crank pulley bolt and turn it over by hand (or put in 2nd gear and rock the car to turn the engine over) to make sure it is not seized?

Also, check battery earth/ground connection in the boot/trunk. Where it bolts to the floor. There's a captive nut which can get rusty and cause a high resistance to heavy loads/high amperes, like when you start the car. Rust/corrosion & good wiring continuity somehow don't mix.

That's where I was going with my questions too....

Ok so starter turns with power straight to it.

I think ignition wiring is where there could be a problem. No power to red/white wire when key is turned. Also 4 pin connector is old and terminals don't look great plus out of the 4 wires 2 have power 2 don't including red/white. I think I'm going to rewire them.

Fiddle about in this area before rewiring...is their electrical continuity through the connector etc

If all ok, next check the ignition switch. Those locking column switches can be a bit dicky once the contacts become worn.

You called it. Thanks Definitely the switch. Now to remove it. Any thoughts?

Not so sure they can be overhauled. Maybe replacement is the only option. I'll check a few spares I have & let you know.
