Hi everyone. I am wondering if anyone can tell me the factory layers of paint? I have noticed on the van I am working on that the base is a red coloured primer followed by the body colour. Is this correct or.is there other base coats before final colour is applied. Further to this I am chasing info on RAAF issued vehicles, colour, accessories, differences etc.
Any help or info or.a direction for my research would be super.
Happy mini-ing everyone!

BMC Aus used the roto-dip. There is a good explanation here and you can find more on google

BMC produced this strip of metal showing the various stages of application of the rustproofing and priming. I think it was mainly used as a Dealer aid and seems to be quite rare as I haven't seen another.

It does not matter what they had you cannot produce there procedures and paint today, We have much superior paints today ,you can still use acrylic undercoat and top coat. If you want good paint use a 2 pac epoxy undercoat followed by a 2 pac colour same brand. This type of paint will last 50 years, do not use etch primer. We even paint T Fords with 2 pac. the ONLY way to go . you can also use the newer water based paints which are on all new cars. cost $$$

Re: RAAF vehicles.
The "Mini Experience " and "BMC Experience" occasionally had articles about minis and mokes in the services. There is a category on this site under "Board Index" for these magazines.

Thankyou for the helpful info. Car will definately be painted using modern paints and techniques. I am actually trying to discover the original colour of the car through all the different layers that are on it.
I will look into the magazine articles for further info re RAAF information.

Allen is spot on .The advantage with the old acrylic is that you can do touchups and it will melt in .It wont hold gloss like modern paints . It shrinks back unlike modern paints .Some old blokes still do it though .

make sure you do a check list on approx. costs before you take on a project ,and skills that you can do to save money. You do not want an unfinished project because you did not do the sums. All these restos sound good ,I have seen cars that never should be on the road because of shoddy work. I have been involved in numerous restos and it takes time skill perseverance and money
