The usual topic that comes up a million times.

I cant think of the last time I changed the oil on my car. Possibly about 4 years ago. Its probably done about 100 klms in that period also. The oil on the dipstick still looks like honey.

Has anything fancy come onto the market in that time that is better or worse to use?

I used to use BP Coarse Plus but that isnt available anymore. Then I started using Penrite HPR 30.

Dont need to use anything too light as its always 30 degrees up here. 20-50 still the go?

Penrite HPR 30 still suitable? Mineral oils still all the rage?

I’ve changed to HPR30 and it works well for me. It also has more zinc additive than the mini specific oil and is a little thicker when hot

Bugger.. I just ordered in 5L of the Penrite Classic Mini. Surely there is a reason they designed that stuff?

I use HPR30 in my other car.

I used to use BP Corse Plus until it was dropped.
Castrol (who market BP) recommended using Castrol Edge (the only mineral version of "Edge").
Changed to Penrite HPR30 and found my Mk2 S suddenly had good gear changes again!
Have tried Penrite Classic Mini and it was good - basically the same as HPR30 (suspect it WAS the same) - just harder to find and slightly dearer.
HPR30 or Classic Mini seems to be a good option to me.

I was using Gulf Western XP, but switched to Penrite HPR30 last time I did an oil change because it was on sale and I'd read good things on here. I'll be going back to Gulf Western this time, gearshifts suffered and it's significantly cheaper full price than HPR30 on sale.

Just grabbed some HPR 30 yesterday for my black car. It was only $36.99 at Autobarn.

I would expect he extra 10 viscocity points to make gearshits slower, likewise a thinner oil will speed gearshifts up. The baulk rings in the gear box won't grip as well with a thicker oil. I think the grade of choice is a compromise between a thinner oil for the baulk rings, and a thicker oil for the rings and bearings.

Is it still called XP? On the Gulf Western website there is only an XMP 20W-50, no XP.

I've only ever seen XP at Supercheap Auto, and I don't remember ever finding it on the Gulf Western website - not sure what the situation is there...

notes from a facebook message asking them the question.

"Hi Nick, I have some info from our senior chemist for you.
There is NO formulation difference between XMP and XP 20W-50, they are just sold to different retailers hence the different product names. Both of these products are mineral oil grades. We recommend our Protecta Multivalve 15W-50. Why? For viscosity grade, Protecta Multivalve is a 15W-50. Slightly lighter viscosity at startup than the 20W-50 grade (may be important for transmission shift when cold) but same protection at operating temperature."

I managed to get a hold of 5L of this for my little red cute car.... Bit of a hassle. All the Auto shops here said they could order it in, but they had to order Qty: 4 and that I had to buy all 4.....????

Rapeco was the only help and got one transferred across from Darwin.

Earlier on this thread I said I was using Penrite HPR30.
When I did a check on their website, HPR30 was now listed only as a synthetic oil and not recommended for engine/gearbox units.
I have had to order a carton of Classic Mini oil too. But I've got 3 minis, so will use them.
