Last year, I rebuilt the 2-speed wiper motor with new bits from auto Electrics on Wheels (Tony B.). Wipers were only used once...9 months ago.

When I got ready to drive to Mission for a wheel alignment on friday, the windscreen had some light mist or dew drops. So I wiped the windscreen clean with Windex & paper towels.

This set the stage for the install of the Heavy Duty wiper arms & blades. The RH bits came after the ALCAN was over. Got the arms & blades properly aligned and set out.

Within a kilometre more moisture had built up on the windscreen. Turned on wipers...they moved slowly 25 deg. and stopped.

OK, thinking dried out and/or too heavy grease in the rebuilt motor & rack. Pulled the cover off today. The wiper motor ran just fine in light grease and the rack went back & forth smoothly.

QUESTION: is the combination of HD arms & blades too stiff for the motor?

Quite possibly too much drag. I know there was major problem years ago when twin wiper blades came out. Heaps of burnt out wiper motors across all makes and models ensued!

Hi Rick, on my early 1965 cooper S I have fitted the later round motor 2 speed wiper and use arms and blades from the last Rovers. The arms are very "heavy" and clean the screen like a modern car. If the screen is very dry they may not park quite at the bottom of the sweep, but otherwise very good. I do only use the high speed though. So I think the system works, it may just be that motor. Have you checked the pivots ? Cheers Lindsay

YES, I had completely cleaned out the rack & boxes when i rebuilt the wiper motor.

So, I'm guessing drag is the 'foe' in the situation.

And, YES, I have some new Rain-X in hand to treat the windscreen before heading south on Saturday. Rain-X was very effective on the Mini's windscreen years ago when I took the Race Drivers' Course offered by the SCCBC...and could not reach the wiper switch.

Will report on how things turn out...if it rains...during our 1,600 mile trip south Saturday-Monday next.
