Yes I have met the owner and seen the car on a couple of occasions, I photographed it for the Minis in the Gong Calendar one year. It’s an incredible time capsule. That interior is original and because the car was kept in dark storage it looks almost new. I don’t think the motor has even been apart or removed!

Why do BMC keep doing this to us?

The heel mat and toe pad are exactly like my MK II S, and what I believe are the most common for a MK II car. Most Mark 1's I've seen have the "rising sun" style heel mat and the fancy embossed toe pad. If I wasn't told otherwise I would identify that carpet as MK II. Of course there were differences to the above, especially during the Mark 1 and 2 changeover period.

Sigh

Yes interesting to look through the photo's of an early Mk 2 Cooper S.
I have the "rising sun" style heel mat and fancy embossed toe pad with black carpet in my Mk 2.
I think the above Mk 2 is earlier than mine based on the story attached. Also noted the earlier heater and brake booster but later steering wheel. :?

The car above is YG2S4 636.

It appears that a few MK2s received the MK1 heal pad. It could have been a supply issue and they grabbed some MK1 heal pads until the MK2 stock was replenished. I have 3 cars listed like this - Car 1237, 1732 and 1814. The toe pads look to be the correct MK2 style.

Because I don’t think they would have ever imagined that anyone would care in 50 years time what pattern the heel mat was, or what texture the vinyl was, or if a screw was chromed or stainless etc. etc.

I challenge anyone, without looking, to describe the pattern of the heel mat in their current modern car!

I know we are all focused on restoring the cars we love (myself included) and getting the details right (it makes it a challenge) but sometimes we need to take a step back and be realistic that some variation did occur.

It happens still today. I remember my in-laws bought a very early Subaru Forester and then we bought the exact same model/year but 6 months later. It was surprising how many subtle differences we noticed.

So in 50 years time the people restoring their vintage Foresters will be having a similar discussion. [GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]
