Hi all, i am curently doing a restoration on the engine bay of a late 1969 build MK2 S of a mate of mine. The boosters body (the round bit at the back) looks to have been painted black (with a paint brush) and does not look original. Should they be black or plated in silver or gold zinc. The booster chamber was plated. Being a 1969 MK2 S it should have the Lockheed servo. From car 1614 they went to the VH44JA. Here are the original colours. Attachment: Lockheed Booster.jpg Attachment: Unrestored VH44JA.jpg

GTOgreen's photos just prompted a thought: can I suggest that the clamping ring that holds the vacuum shells together have its joiner clamp positioned underneath the unit at its lowest position to allow moisture to drip out. It sounds a bit fussy but if it isn't, there is always rust in the ring and the on the edges of the shells when dismantled. |

As an aside, if you are trying to keep everything original in the engine bay the 12AUW wiper motor cover should be gold passivated to indicate negative earth. Silver indicated positive earth. Attachment: MYH4088 Chart Motor Assembly Screenwiper Negative Earth table 1.jpg

It's worth noting that the early and later Lockheed boosters where finished in different colours. Early cars had the silvery/blue colour as shown in gto's pic but later ones, such as my 68 build, where finished in a very pale gold colour. The cylinder casting was never painted, just left as cast. Thanks for the Comments guys. It appears that the early booster has been changed to the later type at some stage in its life as the car number is 1385 so should have the Lockheed type. There are numerous other small details that are not original so the owner will most probably not want the expense of changing it. As for the Wiper cover, It was actually plated in gold but the result from the platers was really light on with the gold. There is a slight gold tinge to it when you look closely at it. I had mine done at the same time and the finish on it was totally different. The quality of the plating however is very nice. CP Plating in Brisbane if anybody is interested. I will at some stage see if the owner will allow me to add the car to the register. He is the original owner and an all matching numbers car. Cheers and thanks Ian |

Every little bit of production data added is of benefit. Please stress to him that the Register is not interested in who owns the car, where it is now or even whether it still exists or not, so there shouldn't be any privacy issue. It's purely the original vehicle production information that's held.

Hi Ian Not sure if this helps as my booster is a PBR which was fitted to the later cars but Iv'e attached a photo re colour. It was cad plated a number of years ago when the car was restored. I was told that the finished colour is controlled by the length of time the item is held in the dip tank and then there is the old cad finish and the more newer modern yellow look finish I found that the best original finished look can be done by an Aircraft service work/plating shop if you can get access. Gtogreen1969, I have not done anything to the car for months. Mainly because of the current restoration of my mates cars engine bay. I'm not sure what stage you last saw the car at but it's basically all in paint now. Colour sanded and buffed. Ready for re assembly. FYI, I did all this myself in the shed. I'm not a panel beater or spray painter, and yes if an expert looked at it they might find some flaws but I'm really happy with the result. I think I've blocked the whole car 8 times now from bare metal stage. Below are a few progress pics. Sent from my SM-G965F using Tapatalk |
