2 return springs are required to return the 2 throttle butterflies to the closed position.
The other return spring to the aircleaner is to return the accelerator cable to the fully returned position.

The other way people do it is like this - but its hard to get to the spring if you need to play around with the accelerator cable.

Go for the second option. The spring going up to the air cleaner is a major pain in the bum to get on and off for simple checks and there simply is no gain in it to do so.

Never (sic) used the third one. If you don't use it fr its proper purpose may as well delete it all together.

Cheers, Ian

Is the one that goes to the air cleaner the same. I thought I tried it once but it seemed too tight.

I fitted a lighter spring instead but it really only takes the little bit of slack out of the centre linkage.

Like Ian, I found the throttle too stiff with 3 springs on.
If it needs 3 on you need a new cable, IMO.
Back in the 60s, cables were stiffer, they probably didn't have Teflon liners.

I had a look through the Brochures and Magazine articles for a good photo but the GT crash test photo shows the spring in the highest definition. It looks like the same spring as the throttle butterfly springs and it was fitted to the airbox on the MK1 S, MK2 S and GT. I am using the same spring but I might try it without and see.

The 3 springs are the same.
The early 997 Coopers had pancake air cleaners and the 3rd spring hooked onto the bar the butterfly springs hook onto.
If you are having trouble getting the 3rd spring off the throttle cable lever when it's hooked up to the air cleaner a flat bladed screwdriver with a small groove in the blade enables you to push it down off the cable lever and move it sideways. Easy.

I use large long nose pliers. Takes 2 seconds.

My third spring was a bit loose, so found another in my pile and put it on the air cleaner loop. Car drives much better at low revs - no slack in the throttle cable - just have to push harder to get the car flying!

High spring tension = good fuel economy
Low spring tension = car goes much faster!

Ha Ha!

I recently bought a set of 3 carbie return springs from a Mini parts supplier. When you open up the accelerator to max, the springs try to pop the hooks out of the spring. If you max the pedal a few times, suddenly the springs part from the hooks and you have no return spring working.

Is there a fix for this, or has the supplier given me the wrong springs?

Or are the springs you have the correct part but poor quality?

I think SU Midel sell the springs under the SU name so you would think are up to specification.

The part number is AEC2075.

Did you get them from a reputable supplier? Have you been back to the supplier for advice?

Adam Bressington at SU Midel would be able to help. His father Bill started the SU Midel business many years ago, and it was Bill who built the HS4 Police Spec carbies for BMC Australia.
