Looking for a bit of info on the gearbox I have.

It's in a 1963 850 and the casing is a 22G68. It's a one owner car and not touched. We've determined it's got A type gears cos there's bushes under the mainshaft instead of bearings. The laygear is worn and needs replacing.

According to all the info I've read, the laygear should be a 22A381 but all it's stamped as a G40. Is this the same laygear? These are hard to get but there is one on ebay for $295 (NOS).

Everyone I've spoken to reckons I'd be better off upgrading to B type gears and I can get hold of a complete box with casing 22G382 which would do the job. Unknown condition as it's still in the car. Still want to keep magic wand.

What would you blokes suggest - buy the laygear to suit the A type (assuming I can still buy it and the 22A381 is the right one) or go with the B type?

Hi, I personally would fit the entire B type gearbox internals into your casing. I have done this with a not very worn deluxe box that II fitted the lot into an early 850 case. It was a few years ago, but I do not remember any complications, and its a far better engineered box. Deluxe boxes are not sought after and often have very good laygears.= fair price

Lindsay - is there any advantage in putting the B internals into my old casing rather than use the casing that they come in? Any traps to be aware of when using the old casing?

Hi Rocky, I do not remember traps, but I have done hundreds of gearboxes, and there are lots of traps with any gearbox. i personally will never use a brand new synchro ring.
The advantage of putting it all in your casing is presumably all the cases match, and you get to keep the original case numbers, but none otherwise. Most times when you buy a gearbox you don't get matching bell housing / end cover, and its nice to keep the idler gear train intact if its healthy and quiet.
I always replace idler gear bearings, polish the shafts on the laygear to make sure that there is no hardening pitting.
The design of idler gear bearing is tragically bad, as I am sure rollers skid, and the hole the bearing goes in is not really round. A plus is a huge improvement with larger bearings.
I also always replace both large diameter ball bearings , helps with long term reliability and quietness
You will also notice if you have some original needle rollers that new ones usually have less rollers, which equals 10% less load carrying capacity, so the clever people fit new rollers into original cases ( usually applies to layshaft rollers at least)

BTW, another reason not to use your original box is those brass bushes supporting 2nd and 3rd gears break into little pieces under load.

Thanks very much for the info Lindsay.

I'm looking at getting the replacement box sometime this week and hopefully it's in good enough nick to use. Putting all it's internals into my old casing sounds like the best thing to do and I've got an experienced mini mechanic on board to do all the technical stuff. He's already ordered a heap of new parts (layshaft, bearings etc) and as far as I can tell, these are the same for both the A and B type gears. Will need to get the roller bearings for the 2nd and 3rd gears though.

The rollers in 2nd and 3rd gears are loose rollers. Most times you can re use them, get a magnifying glass onto then and make sure they are not through the hardening, then re use them.
There really is not a lot of load on them in small bore motors

Thanks Lindsay. I did notice that you buy each roller separately - 26 per gear. I wondered why they were individual and not in a unit and now I know.
