I would like to restore an original alternator to run on my car, June build 1969.
Can someone show me what an original one looks like. I was assuming that they are the 15AC ones with external regulator. I have a couple here but they appear to have internal regulators. I'm certainly no expert hear but if anybody has pulled one apart and can tell me if these have internal regulators or not, or if i even have the right ones for the car, that would be great.
Cheers

Your car looks like it had the 8TR fitted. I can see the shiney base of the regulator just above the servo.

Going by the wiring diagram the 8TR was paired up with the 15AC alternator.

Hi Ian,
I have a 1969 Mk2 S. It has a 15AC alternator with an external 8TR external voltage regulator mounted on the driver's side flitch plate, near the fuse box. Your photos show a different model to the alternator in my car, the diode pack and the external connection look very different, more modern? The photo below shows a 15AC alternator (for my next project) with its black cover removed. From memory the cover has 15AC printed on it. I know some people use a later ACR alternator with an internal regulator and leave the external regulator in place for the sake or "originality". I have an ACR one but have managed to keep the two 15AC models I have, running with periodic replacement of parts, bearings and diode packs mainly, over the past 41 years.

Here are a few more pics showing the 15AC and 8TR combination.

You should only have the one regulator in the system.

There is a little black plastic cover as well that goes on the back of the alternator. You can just make it out in the pics above.

Thanks Guys, So it would appear that I have the incorrect 15AC. So I am now on the hunt I guess. Just another piece of the puzzle to source.

I was really only doing all this now as I am having some parts Zinc Plated again and will get the fan and pulley wheel done now. I wont actually be fitting the Alternator for a while.

Cheers
Ian

A bit late than never, a few pics from my '70mk2 S - obviously still needs refurbishing.

Ditto for "cgo's" comments. All the wearing parts are still available to rebuild them.
People criticise them but I've run them for over 40 years with little trouble.
The aluminium-bodied 8TR regulator is long gone NLA and considered unreliable. There is a 4TR plastic box that can replace it.

Be careful buying 4tr regulators I found there are 2 different pinouts on the same connector.
The other one suits Jags and won't work without rewiring.

I have an 8TR to run on mine. Have no idea what its like. We will wait and see.

Thanks to Matt Reed. I have also sourced the correct alternator.

Cheers
