Hi Guys do I need to grease the gear that engages the flywheel? Do you also know where the solenoid for the starter is mounted?

I don't. Grease will mix with dust from the clutch plate with the potential to gum things up....

The solenoid lives on a bracket that attaches to the upper front of the transfer gear case. The solenoid to starter cable is generally stiff enough to set the location if you bolt one end to the starter...

But I put powdered graphite on the splines inside the pinion assembly.

This is the location and angle for the 1973 GT starter solenoid.

With the introduction of the Clubman range the starter solenoid was attached to a bracket between the engine steady and block. But for some reason all the 1206 series engines had the starter solenoid bolted to the transfer case. I think it was to give more clearance from the clutch breather hitting the steady bracket.

This was the position for the 9FXEY, 1200 and 1205 GT engines.

Here is a Clubman Van showing the bracket that goes between the engine steady and block. The same bracket was used in the Leyland mini range as well.

Yes thats the one - Lucas 4ST.

It was first used here on the MK1 S in early 1968. They originally had a push button start but the push button function was deleted in late 68 / early 69 when the UK built No 76766 was dropped for the local version No 62933009.

Quality is a bit hit and miss with the repro ones. Some last a few months and others have no issues.

Ebay you might get NOS of the UK made 76766. I haven't seen any NOS aussie built ones.

The original ones have date stamps.

I am not sure where the New Lucas solenoids are made but they do have manufacturing plants in India and Pakistan.

The new lucas built ones are not up to the standard of the originals. But you may be lucky and have no problems. I personally bought a new one and its fine but I have seen others complaining about being on their 3rd solenoid in 12 months.
