Could you explain the fretting you see? I think you mean on the cap mating surface?

The dowel is $15 and I could mask off the block. That could be a goer thanks. Would it throw the line bore out though?

Re oil pump, I'll do that. Awesome help guys.

Also, depending where I look it up, there are differing torque settings for the big end caps: 48 ftlb on conrod website for my specific rods; but 28 ftlb on the 'general advice' leaflet that came with the rods (ie may not be for my specific set).

Aaand 32ftlb on Mini Forum; 38-40 on Minispares; 42 on Minimania, but I think there might be a mix of ARP and non-ARP bolts in these lot.

Hi, if you look at where the cap sits, there are dark and light patches, and I think if you remove that round dowel (maybe with a drill bit blank end as a tight fit to stop you crushing it)and then use a long oil stone and kero etc to move the stone crosswise I think you will find a few mark that are eaten into the surface, like minor rust marks, but you wont be able to remove all marks You wont change the dimensions, if you only really clean it up, and the cap as well. The better that surface is I think the longer it all hangs together imho. The absolute correct way to do those conrod bolts is by measuring stretch, but most do it by a tension reading. IF THEY ARE 5/16" bolt = .312" or 8mm approx , they WILL NOT BE 48ft/lb. If you overtighten them or overstretch they will break. Sounds like a visit with caps and bolts to your machinist..He should know the tension . It also occured to me, do you run an oil cooler... If so THROW IT IN THE BIN, Brand new only You have to get all those metal filings out otherwise IT IS A RECYCLING GARBAGE SYSTEM Cheers Lindsay Siebler

Is that piston skirt to the left OK? Number four.

Good advice Lindsay...I wonder how many engine overhauls have been compromised by re-installing oil coolers without even trying to flush them out etc...

I run a cooler but I've never had a bad engine failure.
However I run a 25 dia x 10 rare earth magnet on the spin on filter can, near the bottom.
Since doing this I get nothing on the magnetic sump plug.

Yes, I have cut a filter up since, and found the magnet trapped all the really fine stuff that the filter element doesn't. :)
I doubt this will work on the cartridge filter, they are much thicker.

Doc, I can see a rare earth some-how-or-other fixed (inside) the cartridge where it didn't disturb the flow much working...Cheers, Mick

Thanks everyone. Bit of info - I was not running an oil cooler during this failure. But I am installing one as part of this rebuild.

I too run rare earth magnets on the filter after seeing the doc mention it in the past.

I will clean up the cap mating surfaces, thanks Iomin.

I'll have a closer look at the piston skirt, TK, cheers..
