Cheers Billy Boy...maybe that lot should be referred to that toothless tiger the ACCC for promoting false advertising!

In old news the Chinese have been selling bootleg bearings in OEM boxes eg Timken, SKF etc for years through some parts shops. IMO your best chance of buying originals is through a bearing shop.
No, I'm not suggesting RHP bearings from Mini shops are dodgy.

Reminded me of the time (1990s?) when the RHP double row bearing became unavailable for a long period. Then a poor quality alternative came onto the market; then a better German made one; finally RHP came back to much relief.

Please keep harping on Bill, as will I. I know of a recent case where brand new wheel bearings in the proper packaging, fitted by a knowledgeable garage, both collapsed within a week.

I shudder to think what ball joints have become, an achilleas heel in the Mini at the best of times. Australians (and others around the world) will be/are being put at risk of serious injury or death...

A bit too late mate. I Mini owner up here bought some ball joints from a mini supplier in Victoria. The ball joint collapsed at 80kph and the mini hit a tree. The driver spent three months in hospital. The supplier said that he wasn't responsible. Bullshit

little FYI if you’re going to check the lay shaft with a file. Do it in the centre where the bearing doesn’t run (not on the taper but towards the middle). The whole shaft is hardened (if it’s been hardened) and you don’t risk any damage to the bearing surface. Obviously it’s a moot point if the shaft is made of cheese but better to err on the side of caution.

Yesterday I tried the file test on the newest layshaft I just bought and compared the results with the old shaft that had been in use for 30 years. They actually both showed marks but could not really feel anything.

The newest one came in a blue box like Morbo28's photo, however, the tapered section between the 2 diameters on mine is the same colour as the rest of the shaft and not a dark steel. Perhaps this one might be good to go.

quality?

I bought a pair the same brand from Karcraft. They seem good, nuts not loose, fitted well on my son's Clubby.

The problem with GSL is they only source the supply of the item; I doubt they would exercise any quality control. So there would be good, bad and indifferent standards, depending on the item, who actually made it and whether they understood how the part was to be used.
