So I wonder what they did between June 62 and October 62?

Cheers, Ian

Normally the release of the approved drawing meant the part or modification could then be used in production, but it's possible production started earlier and the drawings is a catch-up.

Oooops, I used June as when it might be reasonable for a kit that left UK at the beginning of May to have been built... didn't notice that the Manufactured date is given as Sep and delivery in November... An October drawing would be consistent with this...

And I completely ignored the 61 build dates shown on the 850 register....

Anyone have a 61 Oz build 850 and can tell us what sort of drain holes they had?

And, I can't see any differences (other than the badges; Cooper vs 850) between my 63 UK boot lid and the one on my 64 Oz 850....

Cheers, Ian

My observation is that UK built cars have a kind of dimpled slot punched through the bottom of the gutter whereas Oz cars have two drilled holes.

Thanks, mine has the two drilled holes in both corners, so an Aussie car which makes sense.

Spoke with All Car Carpets again today and they assure me that their mould is to suit the Mk1 - I sent through some photos so they could see the difference. Very helpful folks too, great service!

Ordered them today, will let you all know how they fit when they arrive.

Thanks Mick, it didn't seem important to take pics of such detail when I was there... Much more fun sitting in 33EJB and making vroom vroom noises :)

I've also seen early UK cars with a sort of machined slot ... imagine 2 holes drilled about a centimetre apart with the metal between the holes removed...

I think the early crossmember mentioned below was applicable to '59 cars (and 60???) before they changed the sill/floor construction to solve the water ingress issue..

Cheers, Ian

As have I, at Beulieu (Austin 7)...I think they tried drilling etc and then realised that the simple "can opener" type tool on the production line was a lot more efficient...

[Footnote: I wonder if the Longbridge folk deliberately put different drain holes on Morris 850 and Austin 7s as their way of identifying different production "models" as part of BMCs "badge engineering" exercise?]

Hi All,

This is the style of pattern on the set I got from All Car Carpets some time ago, not the same as the originail in my 61, but it’s not going to bother me :D

Ian

Here’s a diagram from the 850 parts book for reference

Still waiting for mine to arrive. 2 week wait for manufacture, then shipping. Probably another week.

As he’s said in the post it’s a 1962

Yes...However, as I said, many a Mini had their boots changed in the period...so an early car could have a later boot lid and Vicky verka! :D

BTW I read today that UK adopted wind-up windows in 1969 for the Clubman, Clubman Estate (998cc) and 1275GT...unveiled at the Oct Earls Court Motor Show...and credited to the Australian innovation.

The Zanda and Unipower GT were also launched...

[Sorry for the highjack...back to rubber flooring]

UK Wind up windows first appeared with the launch of the Mk 3 Elf and Hornet in 1966.... but were (IMHO:) much inferior to the Oz versions as they deleted the door pocket..... although this was probably because of the revised hinges rather than the winder mechanism...

Cheers, Ian

And Innocenti used the Australian design for wind up windows, but also with some differences for their local manufacure.

Mats arrived today. Good quality and I like the finish, but doesn’t appear to be any mats for the front wheel arches. There is a lot of material left on the rear section so maybe I’m supposed to cut them from that? But nothing about it in the instructions. See how much is left when I fit them on the weekend. Only the rear cut is trimmed too. So going to have raw edge where the mat ends around the bottom of the wheel arches and up the bulkhead. Be interesting to see if they actually fit. The mould does look right for early Mk1 though, so that’s good. But jury out on whether these are worth the $$$.
