Post subject:  1961 Mk1 Traveller - English import - in my shed

Was cleaning out my shed - sold my house.

Found 2 mini's one of them this Traveller.

Photo gallery here http://www.tbitc.com/photos-of-my-mini-traveller/

The traveller is heavily rusted - apparently the old steel bodies are famous for it.
It's without the original motor/gearbox, but I have the original plates and rego papers in my name so ownership transfer is a possibility.

I also have the plate with the engine number on it - engine numbers in 1960 travellers were riveted to the block.

The wood is all there, but the wagon needs a lot of body work to be fully restored.

It was my grandfathers car and I remember travelling in it with him as a nipper. Been gunna restore it for 25 years and never had the time.
Still don't have the time and now moving to smaller house - don't have the space.

Sadly I think I will have to sell it. What's it worth? How rare are they? Is there much interest in this sort of thing? It's been 25 years since I last played with mini's.

I think you will find lots of interest in it, even without it's original engine.
It's a bit hard to put a price on it without some decent pics of its condition.

Yes, interesting! :P

Is it a Morris traveller, or an Austin Countryman?
The wavy Austin Grill is easy way to tell!
Whereabouts in Aus are you Whompem?

Great Find! 8)

Edit, looks like you're in SA...

Just working on a photo gallery - I will post a link here.

The old post - Yup that's was when I was first going to sell. I got them both out - no cops required, and now they are both in the firing line again.

This time they HAVE to go before August 20th. They can't come with me. It hurts!

Its probably worth more than you'd think. Its an early one with an internal tank. The register in the UK only has 17 internal tanked Morrises on their list. There are only three internal tanked woodies that I know of in Australia and yours is the earliest one of them. Do you have a heritage certificate for it? From the engine number I'd guess its from late 1960 or very early '61.

Its very cool, but then I'm a bit biased towards Old English White internal tanked Travellers.

Post subject:  Yes it internal tank

Yes it has the internal tank and it's a white body.

The engine number was 8AM-U-H103681 body number FE127168 I think

Engine number from rego documents and it matches the engine number tag I have.

It was last registered in 1983. The rego documents say it's a 61

What's a heritage certificate? How do I get one?

Just looked at your traveller that's what mine would look like if it were as nice as your.

My mate calls me Timbo - amazing!

Snap, maybe we're twins? Our Minis are identical.

You get heritage certificates from The British Motor Heritage Centre in the UK. They have the original factory records for early UK production.

The advantage of the heritage certificate when you go to sell the car is that you can demonstrate its authenticity. You'll be able to say for sure whether its a '60 or a '61. Mine looks like this:

Do you know how yours came to be in Australia, did your Grandfather import it?

Post subject:  How did she get here?

I know my Grandfather bought it second hand in the late 60's here in SA.

He left it to me in the 80's.

Thanks for the pointer to the heritage certificate. I will order one today.

Post subject:  Chasis number

Timbo your chassis number is way different to the number I am using.

My wagon has a number stamped in large letters over the radiator grill. So if you look in the engine bay the number appears to the left of where the radiator cap is located.

This is the FE127168 number I have been using - nothing like your M-AW number

Where is your chassis number located? I am worried I have the wrong one.

I don't know if it means anything but my engine number 103681 is a lot of engines earlier than your 115139. But I realise that these numbers may not have been sequential and they may be different manufacturers too. Any thoughts?

You have a M-AW tag in your pics, I'm fairly sure that should be riveted to the slam panel on the front. Unfortunately I was unable to get a heritage certificate for mine as it is a SA import they didnt keep any records

It should be out of the paint shop next weekend and the restoration can begin!

Post subject:  my face is red

Babes - my face is red - the M-AW tag is in my pix - arggghhh it was a dark day and I was in a rush.

Can you give a little more detail on the locations please. The slam panel - is that where the engine stabliser bar connects to the firewall? Pass or drivers side?. I am flying through tomorrow and can take a look and collect the M-AW number.

SA import - when you applied for the heritage cert and they couldn't issue one - did they refund your $?

The slam panel is the bit that the bonnet latch slams into when you close the bonnet. There is a rectangular plate on there, beside the bonnet latch. There's also meant to be an oval plate on the radiator shroud, but I think that I can see the two screw holes in your picture, where it isn't.

The FE127168 number is the Front End number. It was used for internal purposes at the factory and there are no records that can match it up to a car or body number, but there are a couple of guys in the Uk who can approximately date a car from its FE number. Some cars also have a plate or a number stamped in the drivers footwell, but I can't find it on mine.

Your engine number is not that much less than mine, maybe about 1 months production. They were knocking them out at around 10,000 a month at that time.
