Hi there

Quick update and question. Got engine dummied into subframe and want to know how far back people have gotten their 4EFTEs to sit.

Image

This image shows how far back it is at the moment. I need to drop it a touch, and also get it back about another 40 - 50mm to sit dead centre in the driveshaft openings. I know most people have taken away the whole front of the opening, but is this more for access, or just because the engine wont go further back than this?

Are peoples driveshafts going straight across the car or are they angled back slightly?

most guys cut it away so you can get the drive shaft to fit through the hole , for easier servicing later on

if you can dummy fit the steering rack behind your jig where it will sit when in the car you can get a good refrence as to how far back you can go

if i can remember correctly there is a big chunk of alloy on the box you can cut off to get a bit more clearance

cheers Paul

Was playing some more tonight. Started looking at Brakes to see if I could adapt the GT ones to the 1100. Dont think so. may have to go for some of the metro ones after all. Shame as the Starlet brakes are 10inch discs. What is the biggest disc you can get to fit a standard mini disc setup?

Put both shafts into the box to test fit for clearance again and noticed that both driveshafts turn in the same direction. Normally for an open diff they should turn in opposite directions yes?

Sooooo, is my diff stuffed, or do I have an LSD? I've seen pics of the factory viscous gearbox, and it looks different to mine, i.e. mine looks to be a non-viscous lsd diff. Is there any way to tell, (without driving obviously that is still a way off) if it is an aftermarket LSD.

Cheers

Madmorrie,

This is a pic of what a TRD Viscous LSD should look like.

http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22654&start=0

The mechanical LSD's look similar - check with Dean (Bigbad) for a pic of his setup.

If there is no housing after the diff housing then no, you dont have one.

Cheers,
Tricky

Just to clarify.

TRD make a mechanical LSD that replaces the factory diff.

Toyota made a limited run of Viscous LSD's which meant a change to diff/gearbox housing.

The 4EFTE motor/box that we put into Tony's car (Tricky's mate) did the same thing. The vendor was under the same impression that it was a LSD. Are you able to grab one side whilst truning the other? Give that a shot.

if it's in gear they will turn in opposite directions, if not, the crownwheel may turn the pinion, and both wheels will turn in the same direction.... I'm sure the diff is fine. Do what JC said and hold one driveshaft while turning the other, or put it in gear

Tricky - That was the pic I was thinking of, mine is definitely not that housing. Thats why I was thinking it may have an aftermarket one.

JC - Did you work out if the one in Tonys car is in fact an LSD?

I cant' get them to rotate in different directions, even holding both and trying to turn the opposite, they still seem locked together. I did try it in gear but think the same happened. Will play more tonight.

Cheers

Nuppers. We assumed, rightly or wrongly, that the vendor was on drugs and left it at that. He may have been right afterall. Who knows?

Or someone has welded the planetary gears together to make a fully locked diff!!!

I just recently fitted a LSD to my starlet conversion and it is a TRD item and it just replaces the standard open diff. It is aplate type diff and has an amount of preload and if you lock one side and turn the other it will turn if you apply about 50 foot pounds of torque to it.
