years ago i did some work @ a mechanics workshop in Ryde.
the guy who ran the place used to compete in F2 rally championship,
and the car he used was a special edition Detamso Charade (i think?)

anywhos when work wasn't being done on the rally car, all effort went
into working on his daily driver.....
(and this is where the story comes together)

It was a stock Daihatsu Charade with a CB90 engine transplant.
Amazing lil engine with great potential.
This lil beast used to absolutely hammer......

Even back then I had a crappy apprentice mini,
(which i used to cop crap about!)
and always thought it'd make a perfect swap.....
boss always said
it wouldn't fit!
its too high!
blah blah blah

rant over....
Love your work!
will be following your progress with great interest.

I'm very keen on this conversion, because it fits a roundnose without heaps of cutting. I reckon it will look almost factory fitted at the end! Did you actually have to cut any panels at all?

The 4EFTE looks crammed in and untidy in a roundy, especially with the reverse mounted alternator under the guard and various cuts to the engine bay sheetmetal.

Wanna make an extra subframe? :D

I had to move the alternator from the rear of the motor as it was hitting on the subframe tower. I was not to keen on slotting the frame there as its a pretty high stress area.

I did have to move it to the side and cut a small hole for it in the guard. That was the only panel cut and if you have ever seen a daihatsu alternator they are about 1/2 the size of a mini one so hole is tiny.

Yes they are a pretty rare engine but you can still get brand new pistons, cranks and head parts from the UK. Lucky i have a spare motor, it needs pistons but will come in handy if i grenade this one :D

It's so small i reckon you could pick it up and put it in one handed while you do up the engine mounts
Looking forward to seeing this one on the road, i reckon this will be the new next big thing!

Cheers
Aaron

it should be Aaron.... its sexy...

but as many others have pointed out... a very rare engine... id be interested to see if a 1.6L applause engine would fit in a mini engine bay (not that much larger than a cb70) and goes very very hard....hmmmmm

But well done mate.... looks sexy....

At that weight it has to be a winner

Mind you your going to struggle to keep the wheels from spinning. Sticky sticky sticky tyres and low low low!
Motorkhana car i reckon!
Is the diesel derivative the same size?

Hows the family? have you stopped breeding yet?

Yeah i was thinking about the diesel.
A mate of mine has one in a G-11 charade its a turbo diesel running 22psi goes hard and uses next to no fuel,
Turbo Diesel = Torque heaven, just a pitty about the top end.

If its the same mounts X2 on the subframe :D

There is a Moke in Qld running the Turbo Diesel Charade lump and it's about the same size as the CB70, if not the same:

I did a bit of tentative searching today and any Turbo Charade engine seems to be rare (Petrol or Diesel)

On a side note, I'd still like to find a Yaris/Echo 1.5 out of the car and do some measuring. I reckon that would fit, it's 81kw standard and parts supply will never be a problem.

Cheers,

how much does an A series weigh compared to the charade engine at 65kg?
