And in the same vein well, from the same place i found that last link read this excerpt. This gents summation of why he does what he does. I've never heard it said so well.

"Yesterday's entry has generated quite a few responses, and a few links. Like this one. Now on the one hand, I can't help but be amazed by the skill and craftsmanship that goes into these models. But on the other hand I just don't get it (and I mean exactly that, I'm not belittling the effort, just stating that I fail to see the point). The true challenge and the ultimate satisfaction, to me at least, is rounding up as much power as possible and then exerting precise control over it. This is why I do what I do To me, it is the epitomy of being human."

I always wondered, back in the days before engine type was mandated, why no one made a W9 for an F1 engine - I'd expect it would rev as well as a V8 or V10 (inline 3's rev), it's shorter, has a low centre of gravity (even if it is a little wide - but no wider than the Renault V10's of 2001-2004), and would have to be as rigid as a long V10.
I want a 1980cc supercharged version for my Minor Ute... It's actually short enough to fit, and easily narrow enough. I'd have it destroked to 34.5mm (as short as an F1 car - it'd rev to the moon! Well, maybe not with the blower on it) - keep the big bore to fit the valves. The one on there is just a bit too big to be road legal for me (it's a 3.0L). All I'd need would be a lot more money than I have...
I know, not at all Mini related...

Except for the crankshaft material -EN40B?
I liked the bit - only 36 valves to adjust
