I know, it's been a while, thanks for asking. I've been feeling bad for not keeping my Ausmini friends updated. I love the Travelle"R" but because it's such a big project I easily get side tracked. It's almost a curse, whenever I get back to it, another car shows up that I have to have usually within a few days of me working on the "R". It's been a crazy year, my dog passed away a year ago today so I've been a bit depressed and unmotivated, I got married, my practice has gotten busier, I bought a 2002 Cooper S and a Ferrari 308.
So here is what's up. My wife is away during the week doing her Masters degree, for a little over a year so I want to put my Ferrari back together and finish up the Travelle"R" while I have a little extra time. And I'm getting a puppy in about a week and a half, I think it will be a bit of a distraction, but I think it will help me get my Mojo back.
The 308 is a relatively small project, it was a US car so it had terrible exhaust, big ugly bumpers, and ride height is way to high. So I am currently trying to make it closer to the Euro spec cars. I'm hoping to have it together so I can drive it this summer. Then back to the Travelle"R"

Here are the two cars together in the garage, I've since organized my little garage a little better so there is more room to work.

Part of me likes where you were going with that. But then I'd have two cars that would be terrible to drive, instead of two of the best drivers cars ever! So I think I'll proceed with my original plan.

Simon - I know you were just trying to help.

Zulu - I get that reaction a lot, apparently most people wouldn't tear into a fully stock unmolested Ferrari. As special as I think Ferraris are, there really is something great with the old ones, they really have some soul to them. Minis are similar that way. But when it comes down to it, its still a machine, and I feel it's a bit of a shame what was done to them in order to sell them in North America. I think Enzo would approve of me returning the car back to it's roots, like the car was originally intended. I've removed about 300 lbs from the car, and I'm keeping the pile of stuff I removed for a future collector that may want to return the car to an uglier, heavier, quieter, less powerful, and fire prone car. A couple of my favourite things I removed were the 60lb thermal reactor/muffler system, and the warm up system that revved the car at 3000 rpm for about 10 minutes to get the thermal reactors hot before you could drive the car.

I ran a motorkhana day for the australian ferrari club a couple of years ago and one of these came along - the owner was really, really insistent that I should jump in and have a go of it.... I made him sit next to me because I couldn't even find the start button.... didn't that car move

I would take up any opportunity to drive a Ferrari, especially the older more analogue cars, they have more soul an passion. The sounds, smells, and feel the cars have are just so great. And of course the gated shifter is just brilliant. Out of all of the cars I've driven, I like the Ferraris and Minis the best.

Nigel,

Great to hear from you! The 308 looks great.

I hear the US-spec 308 was some 50hp down on the Euro-spec model due to smog junk and all that crap! Still, a flat-plane crank V8 is music to my ears no matter what country it comes from!!

Enjoy it!

Cheers,
Tricky

Don't forget that there was an Italian spec 208 with a 2 litre version.
So the yank version isn't that bad after all!

From one internet source I see the following power outputs..
Normal 308 252bhp.
US spec 237bhp.
2 litre 153bhp.

These cars were a bit down on power and also heavier. So far I've removed 300 lbs of the bits that that came on the US spec car, including all of the smog bits and the highly restrictive US exhaust. My plan is to make it like the Euro cars. I've ordered some coil overs to lower it down to Euro ride height and will be putting on smaller more flush mounted bumpers. I also have plans to pull the engine to replace the factory two piece sodium filled valves that occasionally separate with some one piece upgraded stainless units. I'm also toying with the idea of some more aggressive cams and a more modern ITB set up to replace the stock FI system and get some good induction roar like the carbureted cars had. I'm careful to only modify the car in ways that could be undone and I've kept all the bits I've removed. I doubt anybody will wish the car was heavier and less powerful and want to put all the junk back on. This car is more about the driving experience, all the sights, sounds, smells, etc. If I want to drive something fast though, I'll take the VTEC Travelle"R". (When it's finished of course.)
