The front mount, FWD R1 conversion looks good but the big issue in Australia is reverse. These kits have electric reverse not mechanical like a car should have. Depending on the engineer you get to approve the kit and if your lucky the transport department may let it pass with the electric reverse but they may not and then you have a very expensive track car :? .
If you want to get it road registered you will need to find out 100% what your allowed to use and then make it work or give up.

i thought any reverse was good enough........

it just had to have one!???!

I liked the look of this due to there not being hassle with having the engine in the rear, so both from the transport/engineer side it was a winner and practically its good too.... maybe just a little bit of extra driver effort required when using the right foot with excessive force!

The problem with elc reverse is it's generally a starter motor driving a cog on the diff. A starter motor only has one speed, with that set up you would need to gear it to be very slow (walking/strolling pace). Or you could set it up to be a variable speed controller on the reverse starter, then you have to figure out how to control that speed. Same with the single speed option, how do you turn it on and off?
A mechanical reverse would be used similar to any normal car, controllable by the clutch and accelerator.

The pro-motive kit now comes with a mechanical reverse gearbox, with reverse selectable via a cable.
That'd meet aussie requirements, surely?

This thread is quite intereting!
Can anyone shed some light or confirm PeeTee's comments on the Pro-motive Kit?

Yeah I noticed that, the question is.... would this be accepted in NSW as an approrpriate reverse mechanism (which would then make the R1 conversion worthwile)?

I am hoping someone might be able to confirm this?

Cheers

if you do choose to do this type of conversion, i suggest you modify the sump & relief-valve tulip & fit anti oil surge baffle plate

:-)

& add extra oil

:-)

Here`s one i prepared earlier--> this is my own R1 engine fitted into a mini front subframe coupled to a space-frame--->

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmE1kYeGPps

i was lazy & didn`t do the sump mods that are really needed when fitting bike engines into car chassis, i just added extra oil but it`s just not enough, you really do "NEED" the anti oil surge baffle mods done

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To8-usWZLrQ

the reverse gear is easy enough, simply contact --->

Post subject:  R1 conversion

Saw your clips... Quite impressive!

You mentioned attaching the R1 to a mini subframe, was this then connected to the rear or was it at the front (hard to tell by the clip)?

Also, the contact details for the reverse information, is that in Tasmania as I am interested in what the NSW engineers think about it?

Cheers

Yes do it :!:
But have you talked to some engineers and your local RTA yet? otherwise you might end up with a nice track only car....
