what are you using heaters wise?

i have a rover one but some one reckons don't bother and use a electric one?

Maaate, if you are a true big tuff Qld'er you don't need no wimpy heaters..
I still run the under bonnet Minimatic heater, but I've added a blower so it works in traffic.

My 850 had no heater at all, and even in the dead of winter I didn't find I needed it.

My rover had the bog stocko unit, was only ever on in summer with the windows down when I needed the extra cooling.

My Deluxe is the rolls royce of the lot, its got the late rover 2 speed unit. Works well, for a mini heater.


I wouldn't put an electric heater in, I'd rather have a coolant leak in the car than a fire.

I may go for one of these.

well both my minis have one both not working one plumbed in one aint.

I thought you had to have a heater for demisting purposes? I don't have one yet but I like to live on the wrong side of the law. Breakin the law breakin the law!

How many watts are the electric ones? To make any difference they'd have to be pretty high wattage. At 12V they are going to need a lot of amps so big fat wires to run them, and a big alternator to power them. You are way better off using the waste heat out of your hot water, if you can.

A little back of the envelope calculation. I have a 1200w fan heater in my office, its just about able to bring the temperature up a few degrees but it would be fine in a Mini sized volume. 1200W/12V = 100A. 100 Amps, approximately twice the output of a standard Mini alternator!

I have one of the little electric ceramic heaters.
From memory it draws about 15A x 12V = 180 watts

It's only just good enough for demisting the windscreen in a mini, forget about using it for heating the whole cabin.

A lot of people with retrofitted EVs use like 12v, 10-20A heaters mounted to the dash (or behind or below and plumbed in like a Mini heater) simply to demist the windscreen due to ADR requirements and a lack of cooling water (as most EVs, particularly retrofitted EVs are air cooled).

At risk of getting a bit sidetracked but the best bet for an ev would be aircon driven electrically, its much more efficient than just running a heating element.

EVs still have waste heat that could be used for heating - batteries and electric motors both run hot. The older model Prius we had here at work had a battery cooling duct that comes out next to the passengers shoulder in the back seat, the manual warns not to cover it or the battery will overheat.
