Post subject:  Which swift?

Yes I know it's been asked before but when you search for Suzuki in engine conversions you get 40 pages...

With the g13b engine, which is the best to use? Mk1, 2 or 3..

Will be bolting a small turbo on it so not sure if any of them are better suited to it,

Also I'm doing an engine conversion partly so I have 5 gears, I don't want 4500rpm on the freeway, so which o the engines has the best final drives? I want to keep my 10's so I know it's going to be hard to get a nice final drive..

Thanks in advance

Sean

the smallest suzis have is quite a tall 13" wheel/tyre (the early one,,, the later ones come with 14" wheel/tyres ... so you won`t have much difference in revs with your 5th gear to the minis 4th gear anyways

same problem with nearly all the jap engine conversions (except the diahatsu mira/move) & anyone sensible enough (((like Nathan with the honda & Stew with the turbo swift))) went & had a crown-wheel & a gearbox main-shaft made (with the pinion on the end) in much taller gearing to suit.

but still,,, you can lead a horse to water ... :-)

Surely they make different final drives for them rather then having one made? In the same way I can buy just about any mini one .. Not fussed if that's what i have to do though as it definitely needs a taller one

The Mk1 is the better setup, as it has a stronger diff than the Mk2/3, and the inlet arrangement is more compact. That said, they are harder to find, and Mk2 or 3 are interchangeable as they have the mounts in the same location (Mk1 are a little different). Note that the output shafts are also different between Mk1 and Mk2/3.

The gearing and ratios in all Gti's is the same: close ratio box with 4.1 diff
The Japanese Cultus is different, but they are rare in Japan and are only owned by unicorns in Australia.

The ordinary Swift or Barina has a taller diff ratio and higher top gear for economy cruising, but the diff is a little weaker. The Barina box is otherwise just as strong (fragile ?) as the Gti, but are far easier and cheaper to get a hold of. A bolt up swap.

not really - minis were made for 40 years, and used for every purpose that exists... swifts not so much - they were town runabouts and rally cars - both want a low diff ratio

the tall diff ratios (3.2, 3.1 & 2.9) were created to comply with emission laws late in life. That's the only reason we can get them

In a word NO

Unfortuneately Suzuki were very shifty (no pun intended) when it came to these gearboxes.
No gears or shafts are interchangeable between GTI or Swift/Barina
Final drive ratios are GTI 4.1:1
Swift/Barina 3.5:1

I have used a Mk3 Barina (1994) box with both 12" &10" wheels and they are fine for both city & h/way driving.
The GTI box 1st gear is way too low especialy with 10" wheels.
I would recomend you fit a LSD it will help reduce torque steer.

The myth about Suzuki gearboxes being week is just that, any gorilla can break a gearbox flat changing from 1st to 2nd at 10,000 RPM

What he ^ said, the final drives cannot be swapped between the cases but you can use an entire Barina box as bolt up swap.

I personally haven't managed to break any of my Gti gearboxes, but it is not unusual for the extra torque of turbocharged G13b motors to strip second gear.

if mine gets to 10,000 rpm then the throttle has jammed while in neutral..

im not really one to go nuts on the gears so hopefully il be alright..

also if i do turbo mine it wont be a huge one.. so fingers crossed wel be ok!

looks like i need to head to the wreckers in search of barinas!
